The scanner has an auto-zoom IN/OUT function, It's ok 'cept It sadly
needs a ZOOM magnification display - without THAT it's too disorienting
It would be nice to have the manual zoom back as an option though -
I do miss it. :(

Also not having the name search function on the map is a real pain in
the (you know where) - but that's an old gripe.

I remember reading about an interview with D.Braben which asked this question. His
reply was that the original 'war' in Elite with the Thargoids is over, and that they
have been wiped out, though you might come across them in some remote corners of
the Galaxy...

(saw this in PC Review ~ Oct/Nov - I think)

How come they aren't in the code, then? Rumours are rumours are rumours.

Rumour has it that they were eaten by little green elves.

Seriously, the Empire wasn't in the old Elite, nor were Panther Clippers or large plasma accellerators. Frontier is a new game which is *in part* based on the old Elite. Naturally there are bound to be some differences between the two, and thank God. I for one would much prefer the current implementation over some half-way revamped re-release of Elite.

In Frontier, the radar scanner automatically switches to low range when a ship gets close to you. Try watching an inbound missile on the radar as it approaches. When it gets close enough, the radar image will appear to suddenly jump and/or accellerate for no apparent reason. That's the radar altering its scanning range.

You tell me. During combat I don't really want to be messing about with setting ranges etc. I just want to kick some butt :-)

A valid point. However, most planet names are algorithmically generated and I suppose that makes it difficult to accomplish, seen from a programming point of view. Keep in mind that Frontier offers more than TEN MILLION different systems to visit, so an exhaustive search for a named system would literally take hours.

But a simple 'GOTO Sector' would be mighty useful.

Considering the fact that the Thargoids were really an easy kill in Elite,
they would be even easier to kill in Frontier, due to the fact that the lasers
are much better. Of course, then Thargoids might have developed some new
technology too, but since in Frontier, there's a limited war between the
Empire and the Federation (how original), there really no need for the
Thargoids.
I must say that I don't really miss them ...

Better still, how about the ability to program F1-F10 with ten different sector locations. Now THAT would be truly useful.

Rumour has it that a small Thargoid fraction survived, and are struggling to rebuild their empire in a distant corner of the galaxy :-)

An easy kill? They were by far the most persistent beings to roam the
Elite space - without beam/military lasers you had a very little chance
to survive in the so-called 'witch-space'. The Thargoid vessels have
massive shields, an ECM, and a fleet of Thargons on board. The manual
also states they are usually Elite pilots - ever collided with a
Thargoid?

I'd be happy to see them in Frontier also -- 2500-ton vessels equipped
with plasma accelerators, computer controlled turret lasers, and shields
to match. A challenge!

Yes, the chance to fly military missions for the glory of the Thargoid Empire.
The chance to fly a thargoid battle cruiser. Instead of turrets, the view can
be toggled among your released thargons as they home in on the target. :-)

Now that would be cool. :-) I hope Dave is listening. :-)

Cheers,
Phillip.

Anyone into this excellent saddam-bashing chopper game?

I've completed the first 5 missions of air superiority,
but whenever I rescue the secret agent the chopper auto-lands
and he just buggers off again down into his bunker. I go back
to the frigate after every mission, make sure I don't have any
MIAs when I pick him up, but still having no joy.

Tell me "here's what you forgot to do...." or
"OK, here's the password for the next set of missions" and I'll
be indebted.

Ta,

An "Iron Ass" ship in Elite used to be a Cobra Mk III with heavy
beams front and back, energy boosters, etc. What would the
Frontier equivalent be?

Hi,
If I remember rightly you are supposed to wait
for him outside the bunker; however, while you are waiting
about 6 armoured cars appear you must destroy all of them
before the guy reappears.

Hope this helps.

I think it's level 4 or maybe level 5. It's where after you rescue the men
in the life rafts, you have to so to the bottom left side of the map, destroy
the enemy boats, and rescue all these hostages jumping out of this boat. I
always lost one two many hostage, and was told to start the mission all over
again. Is there a wau you can successfully do this without getting shot down
and without losing a hostage?

That is your co-pilot leaving your chopper you then launch and defend the
area for a few minuets and he will come out of the bunker with your spy.

I got attacked by what looked like Thargoid saucer in one of the systems
around Lave, the thing crashed into me and destroyed itself so I guess
it wasn't a Thargoid or they're not as tough as they used to be!
