Although I do not make a habit of having very long directory names, I
do make use of the ability to have longer, therefore more meaningful
names.

I have a folder on Vista PC with a 25 character long name which I want
to share with my Iyonix via LM98 v.2. LM98's Share field only allows a
max of 20 characters, so of course the name is not recognised.

Before I do the obvious, and rename the PC folder at least 5
characters shorter, is there any other way, please? If there was it
would just allow me to keep my PC naming system as it is now, that's
all.

Shatre the folder from the PC, changing the share name instead of
taking the default, which is to use the name of the folder as is.

Thank you for the swift reply Alan.
I have Vista Home Premium on my HP Pavilion desktop machine.
I am unable to find a way of changing the share name so far. What I do
is:
1. Highlight the folder on the PC to be shared. Click Share on the
toolbar of the window containing the folder, which launches a
file-sharing dialogue window.
2. In this dialogue set permission level, (Co-owner in this case, to
allow full add, delete, etc. access), then click Share button, bottom
right, then wait the "several minutes" it says it could take.

There are no other buttons, menu options, etc. in that dialogue
window. Am I doing this wrongly, somehow, please?

I don't have Vista here to test. In XP, you right-click on the folder,
go to Properties, click the sharing tab, and click the share button.
Immediately below is a writable icon into which is pre-loaded the
default share name. You change that.

Vista may have the same thing, in addition to its new way.

and following up my previous suggestion, if that doesn't work, you
could try

net share shortname=c:\this-is-a-very-long-folder-name

This is in a command prompt, and I think it only has to be done once.

(Command prompt, and run, are hidden in Programs-Accessories).

Thanks again Alan. Whilst Vista is not quite the same structure as
Vista I did manage to find my way using your suggestion in your
previous posting.

The difference was that although there is a Share button, (which
produced the results I described, I spotted the Advanced Share button.
That gave me access to Share tabs, etc. and I now have access to my
long-named folder. Thank you very much.

So I didn't need to try this bit, but for interest, I did anyway, on a
different folder, ("Cooking" - it contains recipes, surprisingly!).

So I did net share shortname=c:\Cooking and hit Return.
It replied with: "System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied"

Not that it matters now, but for interest, any ideas?
