Dialup problems

Having problems with 'Dialup'.

Dialling up and loging on no problem.
But after about a minute or so it all stops.

Mail/News and web pages stop being download.
Giving the modem a kick with !ModemKick makes no difference - the lights
flash on the modem.

Seems to happen at odd times - with two different ISPs.

Phone line doesn't sound any different (speech) than before.

Any ideas - like how to test the internet circuit?

With ref to the above is it possible to use 'Wget' to download large
emails?
