I've tried talking to Pipex but they claim nothing has changed at their
end and are not able to support RISC OS email clients (Pluto in my case)
but nothing has changed at my end so they must have done something!
Any ideas?
It would be useful to know if this is just me or whether it also affects
anyone else using Pipex.

When I was using Pipex I found that their email server sometimes vanished
for a while around 7am. I assumed this was maintenance or similar as it
always returned after a half hour or so.

Working fine here - both last night and now. Email sent.

I find that most ISPs mail severs seem to become unavailable
for short periods of time for no apparent reason.
Maybe POPStar temporarily screws something up, I do no know.
The last time I had an SMTP server go off line I started to
explore the SMTP authentication procedures in POPStar and
tried it with a number of different ISPs that I have
mailboxes with. I found that I could use five other SMTP
servers around Europe, as long as I was correctly logged in.
So, if you have other ISPs mailboxes, I would do the same,
so that you have a backup.

It's not Pluto that either sends or fetches your emails. You could start by
looking at the logs of whatever software you use as a mail transport and
telling us what they say.

Well this is all very strange! It is now working again. In case it is
of use to anyone else then I'll explain in more detail what has happened.
(I do realise that it is not Pluto that does the sending but I was in a
bit of a rush this morning when I wrote that.)
I actually use Hermes (as part of Netfetch) and the log entry I was
getting earlier this morning is as shown below:
Time: 09 Dec 2009 10:02
Account: Send 1
Error: Connection to smtp.dsl.pipex.com refused
I tried this both with Netfetch and with Hermes on its own but the remote
server would not respond at all.
In trying to fix it I tried adding a user name and password into the
Netfetch Account/Security dialogue box (which gets passed on to Hermes)
but this appeared to make no difference so I took it out again again -
still no difference.
I then went out for a couple of hours and tried again after I had come
home. I then received a different error message of:
Time: 09 Dec 2009 12:46
Account: Send 1
Error: #5.7.0 Authentication failed
which I realised was because the Netfetch/Hermes combination had not
changed back to exactly how it was originally set up. I had to go into
the Detailed edit dialogue box for my send mail account and untick the "I
need to log in to this account" option but after this it worked
completely as normal.
As far as I can see, Pipex must have done something even though they
completely denied it!

The idiots who provide support are completely divorced from the
idiots who make the changes. :-(

To be fair I doubt it practical to inform them of every single local
problem.
