I have had a few occasions recently when the News service from Pipex has
been very slow to the point of timing out. I complained to Pipex support
who have come back and said that the Pipex News servers have been
switched off! (Clearly this is not correct as most of the time News
works fine!) However, there was a clear implication that they could soon
stop providing a News service altogether. (Several of the first line
support people I spoke to were not too sure what a News service was!)
I've warned them that this is the reason that I have stayed with Pipex
(it might help if any other Pipex users did the same) but if they do stop
providing News then I'm going to have to look into changing providers.
Can anyone recommend the best stand alone News service that includes the
old argonet groups?

I've found it ok recently. A while back they restricted access to the
server to certain times of the day. I wrote to them and said - as you have
- that if they stop supplying news I'd change ISP. FWIW, when they
restricted use, it applied to that port or whatever because I couldn't
access an alternate server.
I *really* don't understand it. News uses so little bandwidth. If it's
binary groups that are causing the problem they could restrict those.

I switched from Pipex to BT, as soon as I heard about the takeover
some time ago. Not had any issues since.

Pipex's news service was bad even before any takeovers. I got so
fed up of it, years ago, that I started paying news.individual.net
for a news service.
Don't know whether it carries the groups you want, though.

I used to be a pipex customer, about six years ago, and found the news
servers problematical even then! I also used to use Claranews, but I
see that's gone now.. Now I know they are American, but I've used
Giganews for a number of years. Although aimed at the binary users,
they carry several argonet groups - are the ones you want, here?
http://www.giganews.com/newsgroup_search.html?group=argonet&go=Find%3E
They charge from $2.99/month, but they currently offer a 14 day free
trial if you want to check them out first.. I have no connection with
them apart from being a satisified customer. If you are feeling
generous, you can use my referral link: http://www.giganews.com/?c=gn209947
or just use the signup link at the top of the search page link above.
It's fine here and I use it a lot. Apart from the hiccough I described
earlier. And the few problems I've had with Pipex over the years have been
down to the BT side.

IIRC, that was a fair old while back. We were migrated to Giganews.
If they drop that as part of the subscription I'm off too.

news.individual.net is extremely reliable and fast, and has good
technical and administrative support. Well worth the trivial
cost of EUR10.00 pa. See web site at http://www.individual.net/

The site does not carry the old Argonet news groups.
