Anyone got John Alldred's LinkCheck application to work? Despite
making changes to the !Choices file and increasing the WimpSlot (now
1024k) I get an error Subscript out of range 0 0 [15@9720]. I have a
website with a good number of directories and html files.

Are there any other reliable 32-bit link checking utilities I could
use?

Paul Vigay's SiteMap does link checking amongst many other things.
However, it's shareware with a ukp10 registration fee, and I don't
know how you get it registered now. Andrew Conroy at CJE now looks
after Paul's software, so perhaps he knows how to do this.

BTW I think LinkCheck works with Aemulor, but I haven't used it for
years.

With best wishes,

Peter.

Is BASIC source provided?

You could always make a temporary copy of, say, half of your website and
check that, then check a copy of the other half.

No and with over 20,000 lines of code, even if I had the programming
skills I don't suppose it would be simple to troubleshoot.

This sounds awfully messy and complicated ;-(

I really need a little more automation or am I being too fussy?

I've had a brief look at SiteMap but as you say there is a limit on the
number of files it will process without registration. I'll try
contacting Andrew and see if there's a solution. Yes Paul certainly
worked hard on a huge variety of software - how sad he is no longer with
us :-((

Thanks for the info.

In my case it was simply a matter of paying Andrew to
register the software.

How can you know the line count of the source without having the source?

Subscript errors probably are simple to find & fix though.

Sorry, I was assuming when I wrote that that the halves could be tested in
isolation (ie you'd be checking external links) but I suppose that's not the
case? You're also checking links within the site?

Good to hear that. I had no idea what the present situation was with
Paul's software.

There's another approach, which is to check the online website, using for
example: http://validator.w3.org/checklink I've never tried it.

I have just tried it, and it seems to work, even with NetSurf on RISC
OS. It's pretty slow, though, even with my recently acquired
fibre-to-cabinet broadband.

If you're using the online version, which (according to the documentation)
limits requests to other servers to no faster than 1 per second, it may well
take quite a while. I can't quite see how your internet connection speed
would matter, as the check code is running on a w3c server and presumably it
fetches pages directly from the site under test.

One can also download and run it oneself, but that requires one's system to
be able to run Perl.

If you are using v1.33, you could try increasing the value of max2% in
!Choices from 255 and see what happens!

You may also want to change max1% as well.

Have tried your suggestions Martin but to no avail.

LinkCheck keeps telling me to increase max2% and increase the
corresponding WimpSlot. I seem to be in an endless circular loop where
each increase in max2% results in a corresponding increase in the
WimpSlot.

That is quite likely. Doubling max2% uses about an extra 50k storage at
startup ... and that is before any strings are stored.

How many files do you estimate you need to process? Try that.

Have you tried increasing memory to the maximum your machine will take?
(as you are running RO5.18, that could probably be up to 200M or 400M. 1M
is nothing these days!!)

max2% is the maximum number of files on your site it can handle - cam you
work out what that value is? Increasing it is likely to lead to an increased
wimpslot, as several arrays are dimensioned to that value.

To add...
I have just tried it here with my 'small' website.
I increased max1 and max2 to 1000, and WimpSlot to 5M.
There were actually 501 files for max1, and 834 for max2, and it used
well over 4M of the slot. But it seemed to read it all, at least.

It deliberately pauses between each check so as to work on slow sites.

I have a version working on my linux server without thiis delay, which I
can access via NettleSSH. It's very speedy!
