Is anyone going to continue with BTinternet (BT Yahoo) after 3rd June? I can't
get a straight answer from them about whether their webmail change on that date
will have any affect on POP3 services. Does anyone know?

It all looks sinister to me and after many decades, it looks like the time to
change. I have been paying BT 1.60 per month to keep using my original
btinternet.com email address.

Unless I've misread the email I got, all you have to do to keep the email
address is to log into it twice a year. I've set PopStar to log into it
every time I log into my most used box - but then I upload using
mail.btinternet.com anyway.

The email is confusing suggesting you have to log in via Yahoo - but if
you go to the help page is says logging in via your email software is fine.

They keep saying you MUST 'upgrade', but that can only apply to webmail. I have
told them that most certainly the POP3 protocol hasn't changed, so there is
nothing for the POP user to upgrade. They say the 'upgrade' implies giving them
permission to extract certain additional information from your computer, but
only give one example of what it WON'T be used for and not what it will be used
for..

BT My BT Help

Important changes to your BT email terms

Hello,

We're changing the terms and conditions for accessing the email that comes
with your BT Broadband - BT Yahoo! Mail.

From 17 June this year, you'll need to log in to your email account at
least once every 150 days. If you don't, we'll presume you don't use your
email account anymore and we'll close it. Read our new terms and
conditions.

How to keep your BT email

Make sure you use your email at least once every 150 days by logging on at
bt.yahoo.com, using your computer email software (like Microsoft Outlook
or Mozilla Thunderbird) or checking your email on your smartphone. If you
don't, we'll close the account and delete everything that goes with it -
including your emails, contacts, calendar and notes.

If you haven't used an account since 18 Jan or if you're not sure when you
last logged in, just log in before 17 June and at least once every 150
days after.

If we do close your account, you can still use the email address to log in
to BT Wi-fi or other BT services. You just won't be able to use it for
email.

If you don't want to keep your BT email

That's fine. Just don't use it anymore. Then, from 17 June, we'll close
any accounts that haven't been used for 150 days.

Make it easier for us to get in touch with you

The next time you log in to bt.com, make sure the email address you used
for My BT is one you check regularly. If it isn't, change it to one you
do.

Change your contact details now.

Need some help?

To find out more about these changes, go to bt.com/help/emailterms.

Thanks for choosing BT.

But will BT also *delete the details and contacts* from the account? A
former subscriber has written a well-argued and apparently well-merited
diatribe about this in
http://community.bt.com/t5/Other-BB-Queries/BT-email-accounts-hacked/m-p/851812/highlight/true#M51074
and following posts in the thread.

If not, this has serious data protection implications.

I've no idea. I don't keep any contacts or data there that I know of - I
download posts and they appear to be deleted from there afterwards.

Thanks for posting that. The email I got gave a different date (03.06.2013) for
cutoff. After numerous exchanges with support they say:

Hi Barry,

I am really sorry for the inconvenience caused. The upgrade is done for the BT
Yahoo website and it will not affect the POP3 Mail. I understand you are using
an Email Client to access your emails. You can continue using it. The POP3 Mail
will not be affected. If you have any queries, please get back to us. We will
make sure we provide all relevent information.

Any respect I may have had for BT went through the floor when they were
trialing Phorm. As for Yahoo and Google I wouldn't trust either of them as
far as I could throw my 300kg milling machine.

I do have a Yahoo account but only because I needed it to sign up for some
of the mailing lists they host and, apart from the necessary email
addresses, the rest of the information I gave them was entirely fictitious.

From what I have seen, Yahoo accounts regularly get hacked and used by
spammers.

And for the definition of spammers, I would include Yahoo! themselves.

Sounds like the same thing as Virgin/Google.

They are really good at blocking email that isn't spam too.

(BT still have retail customers? Wow.)

For some reason, the Virgin account that I stopped using
about four years ago is still live - at least I was able to
log in to it last night...
