DOSMAP is a command from the DOSFS module in ROM. Try '*Unplug' to see if
it is unplugged and 'RMReinit DOSFS' to restore it.

What does *Unplug tell you?

Thanks Steve. Thanks Ian.
*Unplug shows unplugged modules are DOSFS, Freeway, ShareFS
But *RMReinit DOSFS' does not reinstate it.
:-(

So if you type 'RMReinit DOSFS' followed by 'Unplug' does DOSFS still
show as unplugged?
If it isn't listed but after a reboot it reappears on the list there must
be something in your boot sequence unplugging it.

Yes - I get no error message, but DOSFS still shows as unplugged.
Should it be on the hard disc somewhere - and if so, where?
Thanks again!

It's not on the disc, it's in ROM. If it still shows as unplugged
immediatedly after the RMReinit the CMOS must be locked somehow. I'm not
aware of anything in RISC OS 5 itself that will do this, do you have an
application installed that prevents the CMOS being altered?

Not as far as I know - presumably there's no easy way of telling - the
trouble started after I executed a * command of some sort, but I did
not keep notes :-(
Casting around for possible causes/cures, with my limited knowledge, I
thought of two ideas: a "factory reset" (or whatever it's called) as
possible cure, and trouble with the CMOS battery - could either be
relevant?
Thanks yet again!
I had problems with not being able to unplug CDFSSoftAtapi, and a factory
reset sorted things. But beware - on this RPC running 4.39, I had no
picture at all on restart on my LCD monitor. Hopefully a more modern
machine will use a default refresh rate more in keeping with modern
monitors. Luckily, I have a TV with a VGA input which would lock to that
signal.

Make a note of your unplug list and then try this :-
*FX 162,239,0
Reboot machine. There shouldn't be any unplugged modules now, unplug
anything from the original list if required.

Excellent - that's done the trick - many thanks!
n.b *FX 162,239,0
should be used with caution, it works by writing to the CMOS in a way that
doesn't update the CMOS checksum. On an Iyonix [1] when it is next booted it
finds a 'corrupt' CMOS so resets it to factory defaults.
[1] I'm not sure what happens on other RISC OS computers
