I said I would be back and I am.
Got UniPrint 4 today and have installed it and it printed from the Iyo
to the Brother laser without problem first time.
But I also want to print from the Iyo to my Canon inkjet .
The Brother is plugged into the back of my router but the Canon is
plugged into a USB port on my Windows 7 PC.
The Canon does not appear on UniPrint on the Iyo.

Can anyone give guidance on the Canon installation.

Is the Canon turned on before you try to see it in Uniprint (strictly
speaking should make no difference since Uniprint looks at what
printers are installed on the PC)

Have you set up a second Uniprint Printer icon on your Iyo for the
Canon and configured it?

You can have as many Uniprint Printer configurations as you want.

Do you also have to leave the printer name in the Uniprint RISC OS side
blank?

I have two printers on my PC both of which work via Uniprint according to
which one is selected on the PC.

With UniPrint 4 you can run UniControl which enables you to select the
printer from within RISC OS.

Right - could be very handy if the PC was some way off.

I found my UniPrint on the RiscPC would only work if I gave my Windows
machine a static IP address. DHCP seems to fool it.
eg If I've taken the laptop away & set it to get an IP address automagically,
when I get back, UniPrint can't find the printers.

Cheers,

I don't think this is likely to be the problem in this case because if the
Brother is connected to the router the only way UniPrint would have been
able to print to it would have been via the PC.

True, but I find it easier to setup appropriate printer icons.

If I select 'install new printer' using the iconbar icon a window of
Iyo printer drivers is displayed. Not what I want.

This is where I must be going wrong
If I menu over the UniPrint iconbar icon and select 'install new
printer' I get a window of Iyo printer drivers; not what i want i'm
sure.

Run Printers. Use the icon bar menu to open the Printer Control window. You
should see Windows Printer listed. Find the UniPrint printer definition file
(called UniPrint, filetype PrntDefn). Drag this to the control window and
you should now see two Windows Printers. You can now set these up to print
to different printers. Menu over each one and select Connection. Tick the
File radio button and enter the path into the writable. This should be:

uniprintfs:<hostname>/<printer>

where <hostname> is the name or IP address of the Windows host and <printer>
is part or all of the printer name. I'm guessing that "canon" and "brother"
will work but you can always run UniControl and click on the UniPrint panel
button to find out the names.

You should now have two printer configurations available.

Alan, no disrespect to you, probably just me...
I've never ever, managed to get UniPrint to print anything from this SARPC
to a Win computer with a printer connected.

Win 7 computer.
"Epson Stylus Photo 915" printer connected by USB to the computer, it
prints okay.
All computers connected By LAN and all communicate okay.

IP address of W7 computer is 192.168.0.5

On RISC OS UniPrint the File writable has:

UniPrintFS:192.168.0.5/Epson Stylus Photo 915

From the UniControl panel, UniPrint is showing the Host as 192.168.0.5 and
the Epson Stylus Photo 915 is hilighted ("Use" was clicked a while back).

Refreshing the list still shows the Epson.

On the PC side UniServer is active and on the Taskbar.
The Printers Tab is set to Epson Stylus Photo 915

Obviously the W7 computer is on, the printer is on and has paper and Ink.

On RO the UniPrint Driver is selected.
Try and Print a small OvPro document from this SARPC. (Also Publisher).

It attempts the task but fails with, "Network error Print cancelled."

I can Ping the computer okay, and LanMan98/2.04 Reads/Writes that machine
okay.

Any thoughts please?
Thanks
Dave

I've quite recently discovered a bug that caused this error under some
circumstances. It was difficult to track down owing to its very random
nature. I'll email you privately about this in case this is what you're

Hi Alan,
I have a similar problem printing from VRPC on an XP laptop to a
printer connected to a Win7 desktop machine (wireless connection
between computers). First print from !Impression usually works OK with
subsequent attempts failing with the 'Network error'. The documents
print OK from direct coupled Armini - I had assumed it was a WiFi
problem, but if you can shed some light...

You can solve that by leaving the windows machine as it is using DHCP so
that it can be easily used away from home, but when at home log into the
configuration page of your router, go through the list of devices until
you find the laptop and then tick the box that tells the router to always
give that address to that laptop. Now, whenever you connect it to the home
network it will be allocated that static address but when away from home
it will allocated an address by DHCP without you having to reconfigure the
laptop.

My theory at the moment is that it's caused by the buffer filling faster
than Windows can empty it, and eventually, if the print job is large enough,
UniPrint times out before getting a response from the other end. Increasing
the timeout seems to fix it, at least for me, and once I'm satisfied that
there are no gotchas I will give R-Comp an update.

Assuming the router has the option to make specific addresses fixed
("reservations") - some do, some do not.

It could be possible Charles, but I doubt it in this case as UniServer is
used on this machine and has permission in the Firewall to communicate
through it.

Alan, what exactly is the latest version of UniPrint? I have had
v4.04 in use since 2010, but have received nothing since. Is one
supposed to fetch upgrades from RComp or do they send them, as
for their other applications.

Brian.

4.04 is the most recent official release. There will be a 4.05 at some point
with the fix mentioned earlier in this thread. I'm not sure what R-Comp's
policy is these days. I suspect that unless an upgrade is major they only
mail out a copy to anyone who reports a specific problem that is, or may be,
fixed by the latest version.

Rather then all this criticism. Firstly its got nothing whatsoever to
do with "property rights" and other suppliers have the problem as well
even on Windows.

The main updates are sent out by email and still are. v4.05
apparently does involves some extra changes and work on preparing this
release are on going.

How do I know all this because I asked the horse month - Andrew
Rawnsley direct.

If anyone who thinks they should have had v4.04 and has not received
it as part of the normal upgrades, you are asked to contact Andrew
direct rc...@rcomp.co.uk and he will endeavour to assist especially if
you have had the issue described earlier in this thread. I worked with
Alan Wrigley to help hopefully track it down.

The reason you might not have received it could be because they have
an outdated email address on record for instance, or you are with one
of those ISP who seems to dislike zip files containing RISC OS files
and treat it as spam, etc..

Purley Hosting had this issue at one time I know because my updates
were blocked, and I had to give them my ISP's direct email address to
bypass the issue, so I known it can happen.

So if Bob Latham and Dave Symes would care to contact Andrew, he will
sort you out :-)

I've been getting (In the past Dialup) NetFetch and UniPrint/Server for a
long time, so no excuse for bypassing us.
Until this discussion, I wasn't even aware a later update existed.

I've been using this email address for a long time and getting earlier
updates via it. (The previous address I used is still active anyway).

As has been pointed out before email is not guaranteed to be
delivered, it can be blocked/lost anywhere in transit and believe me I
have seen it happen. Virtually every ISP, hosting firm, Company, etc.
has its own spam/virus/email filtering systems in place. Many are
automated, and if any of those in transit system don't like the look
of your email for whatever reason, it can junk it.

Why not, they have had issues in the past with certain types of
attachments and spam checkers. You are also it appears assuming
Orpheus only deal with RISC OS, they don't and can't really afford
too.

If we lived in a perfect world everything would be delivered without
fail all the time, but thanks to the spammers, we can and sometimes do
have issues somewhere en-route.

I have often wished that the R-Comp website should include a list of
all products showing latest versions. That would make it easy to
check whether I am missing an update before bothering Andrew about it.
Perhaps link to a copy of the History file for each app for details of
whether the update is major or minor.

The moral of the story is: PLEASE for heavens' sake report problems to
R-Comp. I might be already working on a fix, I might have produced a fix but
for the reason given above not it hasn't been distributed universally, or we
may simply not know the problem exists (especially if none of you reports
it).

I contacted Andrew earlier today and he sent a 4.05 which I've now
installed.

That version does indeed sort out my Win 7 UniPrint problem and I can now
print to it.

However, one other problem does remain.
The scanning part.

All is setup, the (USB) Scanner is Hosted on the same computer as the now
(USB) working printer.
The UniScan window has the correct Host set, and the available scanner,
"WIA CanoScan LiDE 110" is set by "Use"

Perform Scan presents the Scan config window, and no matter what setting I
use, the scan is performed, but no image is presented (Scan then launch)
for example. Blank window...

If I "Scan to File" the resulting file is of no use "Unrecognised sprite
data" as one would expect of a file supposed to be 8Mb that's only 56
bytes.

Any thoughts please?

Thanks
Dave

FWIW. On the Win side the scanner will scan from any apps that can use it
including MS-Paint.

All scanners seem to work in different ways. If you have a team of full-time
programmers you can write software that handles them all. I'm not so lucky.

I'm not familiar with the LiDE110. I have an LiDE25 myself and that works
fine. You could try entering a DPI value in the resolution box that matches
one of the resolutions that the scanner does natively and see if that makes
any difference.

You're just not trying hard enough...

So, jokey insult out of the way, time to ask for some help ;)

I have UniPrint 4.04 which for the purpose I mainly use it (printing
to a GDI printer which will never have a native RISC OS driver) works
well. It also prints to my Canon MP495 printer, which is on the
wireless network.

UniLaunch, UniClip and UniCom also all work fine, however, UniScan
(4.03) is unable to find the Canon's scanner, which works fine on the
Windows 8 side. UniServer's Scanner tab does not show any scanners.
Have I missed a step during installation or something?

I'd never heard of this site, nor the !Plingstore application. And, a quick
search of my own archive of csa.announce didn't reveal it. The 'about' page
at that website mentions apps being stored on 'our servers' but there
doesn't seem to be anything saying who the site owners are. How odd!

Why on earth do they email out the .exe's? Why don't they put the zip

Thanks for that thought Alan.
Unfortunately been there done that etc...
Matched both the Res dpi and type of scan, like greyscale or 24Bpp colour,
no change though.

Dave

FWIW(1)... Just for fun... I've even changed the scanners output filetype,
it can output as Jpeg, Bmp and Png but that doesn't change the end result
either.

Not to worry... easy enough to scan in the PC natively and pop the
resulting file(s) over the LAN to this RO computer.

FWIW(2) I can fatally crash the whole UniControl app with the single click
of a mouse button after the scan action.

I'll explain if you are at all interested, either here or by email.
Probably email would be better as I could send you a picture to illustrate
something.

Yes, please do email. Although I can't guarantee an immediate burst of
programming action, the more problems I'm aware of and have documented, the
easier it is to schedule a bit of development time for any particular
application.

Probably not. But unfortunately I'm not familiar with W8 so I don't know how
WIA devices are implemented. First question is always: does it appear on the
PC's own list of scanning devices?

Which might suggest, I suppose, that the scanner doesn't work properly with
WIA but relies on Canon's own software instead. If this is the case there's
nothing UniScan can do in its current form.

'Twas in Archive 23:5 (news insert from London show) and 23:6 (pages
16 and 31).

Jeremy is right about the "About" page. An obvious editorial rule is
that any text using "I" or "we" needs to say who's talking.
Throwing my copy back at me, my old City Editor would say: "Leaves
a question unanswered in the reader's mind."
Only after downloading the Plingstore app, iconbar info says
copyright R-Comp 2012.

I'm glad to see the Plingstore app is available now and has content;
it didn't on my previous checks. It's obviously an ongoing project --
hardly comprehensive yet.

I've always followed the golden rule: if you use an invalid address, it
should explicitly and obviously BE an invalid address. On that basis, I've
never once in nearly 20 years on the net posted to Usenet with an invalid
address (despite what the person who once called me an ignorant bastard

Not having a go at R-Comp as there seems a widespread lack of knowledge
generally about web sites run by businesses: many sites lack simply
accessible basic 'statutory' information. Think about what should be on a
firm's headed notepaper and that should be on the home page, or easily
accessible from it. We shouldn't have to resort to a WhoIs lookup.

How about just this one example from Companies House just about names?

http://www.companieshouse.gov.uk/about/gbhtml/gp1.shtml
...
5. Must I display my company name on my website?

Yes. Every company must disclose its registered name on its websites. You
do not need to include the company name on every page but it must be
displayed so it can be easily read.
...

And if Ltd Cos 'have to' do that, by logical extension all other firms
and practitioners should understand they need to do the same - or very
similar - in order to be seen as legit.

Yes, unfortunately that is the way it seems to be, which is why I never
got it set up on my Kinetic. It is fine on VA, when of course it knows
where the PC bit is located, and I do my colour printing from there.

Kinetic prints to the "shared" laser using PS2.

UniPrint is a server. LM98 is looking for shares, not servers, and AIUI it
uses a very convoluted system based on NetBEUI, not TCP/IP. It makes a great
deal of sense for a server to have a fixed IP address especially in a local
setting where not all routers can handle DCHP lookup properly.

No, I'm saying that the primary purpose of UniPrint is a print server,
whereas the primary purpose of LM98 is to provide file sharing between
peers. For that reason it makes sense to write complicated code for LM98
using a protocol other than TCP/IP, but it doesn't make sense to invest that
time and effort into a TCP-based server.

UniPrint is a server in the true sense, providing a service on a known host
and via a known port, and accepting TCP connections from clients. If anyone
can tell me how that can be made to find a host via DHCP where it cannot
currently do so, or can point me to other true TCP/IP clients that can find
a host where UniPrint can't, then I will be delighted to look at the issue.
My knowledge in this area is limited.

No, Lanman98 does not use NetBEUI, that was the original LanManFS.
Lanman98 uses the NetBIOS naming service which works over TCP/IP on UDP
port 137.

Lanman98 uses the TCP/IP NetBIOS name service (as mentioned in my

Any device providing a service to other devices is a server, to all
intents and purposes. Usually it is a /program/ which is a server because
the whole box can't be called a server if it isn't running a service
which makes it one. Fixed IP addresses for things which are only ever on
one network serving something makes perfect sense, whereas things such as
smartphones and tablets - rarely servers - thrive with DHCP.

The laptop has fallen between two stools, being a server at home and not
when on the road. Setting a DHCP exception may be the easiest way of
dealing with that.

For static machines, I think so. Others disagree. Over the years I have
found that the objects most often subject to factory resets and hardware
failure are routers. Thus you may have to remember how to do all that
DHCP stuff often because I became sick and tired of setting up DHCP
exception tables again and again (maybe it was my models of router but -
buh! Routers' web interfaces are so slow!). On the other hand, I set up
my laser printer once, donkeys' years ago, and it has retained its fixed
IPa ever since and has outlived two routers and quite a few resets. Now
all my static devices have fixed IPas and a home page in NetSurf with
links to and notes of them all. I have two devices with DHCP servers with
different ranges they can use for visitors' smartphones, nettops and
iMacs.

My PC is a server as it runs TightVNC and shares its public stuff. Fixed
IPa.

Myonix is a server as it runs Webjames, ditto RasPi. Fixed IPas.

My NAS is a server (obviously). Fixed IPa.

(Cue the DHCP fanboys who haven't had enough experience of router
failure!!!!!)

Loads of experience of making a backup of the settings to a file for quick
restore.
I've never been clear why anyone would spend ages setting something up and
then not make a copy for quick recovery. Each to their own I suppose.

When I had a router that let me save to a file, I did that but it still
takes time. It was actually having a new router which used to be a bigger
PITA and even today the switches I have which handle wireless or adsl &
homeplug have incredibly slow and different web interfaces. On the other
hand, when setting up any new device (such as a network printer) and
exploring its interface, its initial default DHCP is brilliant at getting
the thing onto the network so you can access it easily to give it the
next free fixed IPa from a list maintained manually.

Sorry, meant to add: YMMV.
