The "Infinity" theme from new-century.org.uk was good but it replaces
the toolbars without replacing the textures. How do I replace the
window/menu/iconbar textures?
Is it not possible to integrate this with the theme manager?

Not unless you give me more to go on. I don't see that here on VRPC.
Can you check that you're using the latest version of Steel, and have
the latest version of the Theme Manager installed. If you still get
the problem, let me know what OS you're using, and particularly if
you're trying out Fred Graute's improved Wimp module. It would also be
helpful to have a slightly more precise description of what's going
on.
Though it may be a problem with the Theme Manager, in the past minor
glitches have usually been caused by interaction with other software
in the !Boot sequence, such as MiscSetup. In general, the API for
visual window flags makes it very easy for other software to interfere
with Theme Manager's operation.

Infinity doesn't contain textures for 16M colour modes so that's most
likely what you're using. You could try creating the textures yourself
by making 16M colour versions of tile_1-16 and tile_m-16 using ChangeFSI
and adding then to the HiSprites file renamed as tile_1-32 and tile_m-32
respectively.
> Is it not possible to integrate this with the theme manager?
Which theme manager, Richard Goodwin's or Chris Wraight's?
It should be possible to add Infinity to either theme manager. I'm not
too familiar with Richard's these days but adding it to Chris' wouldn't
take more than a couple of minutes, assuming the author is in favour of
this.
Please note that Infinity is using solid toolicons so there's no
indication of input focus (no transparent pixels for the titlebar
background colour to shine through). I have modified the ROOL Wimp to
allow a different set of icons to be used for the window with focus.
Both Chris' Steel theme as well as my own themes make use of this.
All being well the modified Wimp will be submitted this weekend (fingers
crossed, it failed the past couple of weekends for various reasons).

It's as though the font manager isn't background blending - I thought
it did on RISC OS 5 (except the pinboard)?

Themes 1.07 on RO5.13. I'm not sure which Wimp module you're referring

Oh so the window manager is being upgraded, thanks. I'm wondering why
text has a coloured box around it with the Steel theme in the filer
and on the Iconbar. Why for other themes and not for the standard RO5
desktop?

Could you do as I suggested and try the latest version, 1.19, please?
You can find it at www.lym.iconbar.com/themes. If you get the same
problem with that, let me know.
Chris
Yes, same problem, and the Themes shows v1.07 from the !Boot display
menu.
Andrew

If there are coloured boxes around text then that's because the Wimp
hasn't been configured to remove them. The relevant star-command is
WimpVisualFlags, use Help WimpVisualFlags at the command line to see
the options it provides.
The theme manager does use WimpVisualFlags but doesn't use the options
to prevent coloured boxes around text. Perhaps it should, what do you
think Chris?
It can be fixed by placing an obey file named WimpSetup inside
Boot.Choices.Boot.Tasks containing the following line:
WimpVisualFlags -all
> Why for other themes and not for the standard RO5 desktop?
I'm not sure what the question is here, could you be more specific?
>Yes, same problem, and the Themes shows v1.07 from the !Boot display

OK. There are two applications here, !Themes itself (which as of this
afternoon is at v1.20), and the configure plug-in (which is now at
1.08). Both can be downloaded from the website. To see which version
of !Themes you have, open !Themes.Docs and look into the History file.
I'm confused as to why you're getting icon boxes. As Fred Graute has
pointed out in another post, these are set-up by a switch in the
WimpVisualFlags command. When Theme Manager is run during your boot
sequence, it issues this command in such a way that the option to
retain icon boxes should never come up.
So, I still think the most likely explanation is that something else
is issuing a WimpVisualFlags command *after* the Theme Manager
somewhere in your !Boot sequence. Please have a look to see if
anything is doing this.
If nothing comes up, try downloading the latest version of the Manager
from the LYM site. This has a tweak to explicitly disable IconBoxes
for the Steel and RISC OS-style themes. I think this should be
superfluous, but if it cures the problem then so much the better.

The icon boxes are turned *off* by using the appropriate switches in
WimpVisualFlags. Theme Manager doesn't include these switches in the
WimpVisualFlags command it generates. The first thing the Wimp does when
executing a WimpVisualFlags command is to remove all previous settings,
hence it's turning icon boxes *on*. At least that's what the RO 5 Wimp
does, don't know about Select.
If there is a WimpSetup obey file in Tasks then Theme Manager will add
any switches that haven't been already defined by the current theme to
the WimpVisualFlags command generated. So, placing a WimpSetup file with
the appropriate switches will fix the icon boxes problem but introduces
other issues, see below.

If there's a WimpSetup or WimpVisualFlags obey file in Tasks then this
will be executed after the Theme Manager as Resources is booted before
Tasks is run. This will cause the WimpVisualFlags settings from the
theme to be lost.
Eg, Choosing a theme when the desktop is already that sets up colours
for the 3D window border will look fine but after a reboot the colours
are back to their default values due to WimpSetup in Tasks.
So, the best solution IMO is to do away with WimpSetup and have all the
WimpVisualFlags options available in Theme Manager. My ThemeTool, that
can generate choices files for Theme Manager, already provides for all
the options.

Ah yes, I've just realised this. I had assumed that an absence of
switch would disable the feature, as happens with the rest of them.
I'm now even more confused. For some reason, whatever I do I *can't*
get icon boxes to work on my system (using your Wimp version).
Something must be disabling them somewhere, but I can't find out
what's doing it!

No, Theme Manager looks at the WinSetup file in Choices:Boot.PreDesk.
This is the file that's generated by the Configure application. Theme
Manager takes a copy of the WimpVisualFlags string there, and merges
the Theme's Choices settings with that. So if your WinSetup file has a
-RemoveIconBoxes switch, Theme Manager won't interfere with that,
whatever your theme's Choices file says.
However, as you say, WimpVisualFlags is *also* issued by
Choices:Boot.Tasks, which overwrites any previous settings. This is
annoying.
>If there's a WimpSetup or WimpVisualFlags obey file in Tasks then this

Unfortunate, this. RISC OS does seem to be very messily organised. The
Theme Manager could manually fiddle with this file, but that seems
intrusive. I wonder if the best thing would be to advise users to
delete the WimpVisualFlags command from Choices:Boot.Tasks manually?
In fact, I might ask the ROOL people if there's any need for this file
to be present at all.

Yes, the latest version includes options in Choices for the IconBoxes.
I'll see if any switches are left out, and add them.

See if you have a copy of !MiscSetup on your system. This issues a
WimpVisualFlags command, which can interfere with the Theme Manager.
See also if you something called !WimpVF, which does the same.
Also have a look in your Choices:Boot.Tasks folder. If you have a file
called WimpSetup or something similar, open it up. If it contains a
WimpVisualFlags commans, then whatever is in this will overwrite
whatever Theme Manager is doing. Commenting this out might solve the
problem.

Are you sure you haven't de-selected the options for removing icon
boxes in Configure? Go to the 'Window' configure plug-in, and make
sure both the options to remove icon boxes in windows are ticked. The
Theme Manager won't override your Configure choices.
If these are ticked, could you check the contents of
Choices:Boot.PreDesk.WinSetup. Does the WimpVisualFlags command there
have the -RemoveIconBoxes switch in it?

That looks fine to me. Are you still getting the 'argument repeated'
error? Does this happen when you boot up with Steel selected? Or just
when you select it for the first time using the configure plug-in? I
don't get the error here.

Er, I don't use RO5.13, but I'm pretty sure your Configure application
should have an icon in it called 'Windows', which opens the option for
controlling desktop appearance. This has been the case since RISC OS 4
at least. I wonder if this omission is causing the problem?

I think there ought to be. RO4 has one, as does Select (AFAIK). If RO5
doesn't, then I'll have to tweak the Theme Manager. If any other R05

There's no option to configure rub-out boxes behind icon text, however.
Are you sure this was present in RISC OS 4?

Choices:Boot.Tasks.WimpFlags calls *WimpVisualFlags, but I don't know what
sets it. There's no WinSetup file in Choices:Boot.Predesk.

There is a Windows option in configure but no options to set iconboxes
etc,I added a wimpvisualflags -all command in an obey file some time

there have been a number of Apps which set it as well.

How strange. It's definitely there in RO 4.x (which I still use).

Could you let me know what's in this file, please? It's possible, I
suppose, that RO5 simply sets visual flag information here, and offers
to GUI-based way to change it. I think I'll have to post a question
about this on the ROOL forums - I've assumed all recent versions of
RISC OS handle WimpVisualFlags in the same way, which obviously isn't
the case.

RO5 doesn't set WimpVisualFlags at all by default. It's only if you
install a plugin (e.g. MiscSetup by Paul Vigay - WinSetup file in
PreDesk) or manually create an obey file that anything will be in the
boot sequence.

MiscSetup has removed the boxes however on the filer and pinboard.
