The answer's hidden in the "Change to Talktalk" thread.

In Messenger Pro I have set up a filter as follows:
Organisation = *usenetmonster.com*
Or List-ID = *usenetnow.com*
Or List-ID = *usenetmonster.com*
Out of interest I emailed them and had a reply saying they were aware
of individuals doing this - yeah...
Initially I put the messages in Trash to ensure the filter worked OK,
now I have selected "discard message" - no more trash...
Hope this helps,

But here, they've stopped coming for 24 hours now, DG! :-)
With best wishes,
Peter.

Hi Bryan,
Can you give a user with little skill how actually to do this please,
Thanks

I'm fairly sure that it's all clearly documented in the manual that comes
with Messenger, but:
* Open the Choices window in Messenger, and select "Filtering rules".
* Click on "Add...".
* Under "Filter details", give the filter a name (whatever you like), choose
"discard message" from the "If matched" popup menu, and untick "Mail" so
that only "News" is ticked.
* Under "Matching criteria", choose "Organization" from the popup menu next to
the left-hand field of the first line, make sure that the centre popup says
"=", and in the right-hand field enter "*usenetmonster.com*" (without the
quotes). This recreates the first filter line that Brian gives above.
* On the second row, start to recreate the second filter line given by Brian.
In the extreme-left-hand popup, select "Or", then complete the second line
of popups from the second line of Brian's filter as you did for the first
line in the previous step (you'll find that "List-ID" is another entry in
the relevant popup menu.
* For the third line of Brian's filter, repeat the process from the previous
step in the third line of the "Matching criteria" section of the dialogue.
* Under "Expiry", select "Keep filter indefinitely". Alternatively, you could
opt for "Remove if unused for 12 months", on the assumption that once
UsenetMonster has moved on, they probably won't be back.
* Click on "Set", click on "Close" the Filtering rules dialogue, and "Close"
in the Choices window.
That's it. For more information, look at the "Filtering rules" entry in the
"Server choices" section of the online manual ("Help..." in the iconbar menu),
or Chapter 8 of the printed manual (in the edition I have, at least).
(A better solution, IMHO, is to put this lot into NewsHound's GlobalRule file,
because you then don't waste any time downloading the stuff for Messenger to
then just discard it. However, that's more tricky to set up than filtering in
Messenger, and you run the risk of losing genuine posts for ever if you get it
wrong.)

Yeah indeed - they do appear to have stopped them. But I guess you wouldn't
know that.
Odd how everybody has suggested filters, but no-one has suggested
complaining which would seem to be the first logical step.

I'd guess someone did. When the first one I saw appeared it was for a tool
I had some interest in so I clicked on the link given and it was already
blocked.

Yes, I wondered about this. However, am I being too cautious in
imagining that reporting spam to a totally unknown ISP might be a
recipe for being flooded with mail spam?
I'd imagine that anyone with any experience of usenet would be aware that
while complaining *may* work, sometimes, filters *always* work.

Many thanks, just what I (and I suspect) others wanted. Never set up
a filter on Messenger before. Much easier than reading the manual which
goes against my religious beliefs!

Thats exactly what I did, hence their reply to me...
You're lucky; well, maybe not considering you're using Newshound, but
there was a malware trap on the site(s) for anyone daft enough to attempt
to trade. I don't know if the trades were genuine but I rather doubt it.
The first half dozen or so sites in the set took the usual few days to track
and were aIui dealt with piecemeal but then the pattern fell out of the
analysis and the rest were/are dealt with generically. This lot made the
mistake of spamming too widely and so the big guns were deployed early.
It's -always- worth reporting a new group of spams (little value in
reporting one-offs) to someone up the line, your Newsadmin is the first
point of call in most cases. The wider the logical spread of reports the
easier it is to track the injection point; 'though in this last case the
Earthlink connection was obvious from the start.

Sensible caution. If you don't feel capable of dealing with the possible
repercussions don't complain to the originating ISP. It might; as you
suggest; be under the spammer's control. Instead report (with your
analysis which (s)he will check) to your own Newsadmin who should either be
able to take the flak or who will know someone upstream who can.

Complaining about any form of spam is /usually/ a waste of time.
Having a news provider who bins known spam (news or email) means I nether
waste time reading it, setting up filters, or reading about people who
do. ;-)
Thank Steve, you always take the trouble and I am always grateful,
Blessings

Anyone with familiarity with usenet would also realise that filters only
work for a very limited period of time. The above filters were redundant on
the day that they were posted. Spammers move on.

I've never set up a filter either - until today - so I'd like to add
my thanks also. If only all instructions could be as clear as this!
