I've been considering this for some time now and decided to finally give it a go next year. Nothing to do with RISC OS whatsoever but wouldn't mind
if I could use the BB instead of having to fire up the cranky Windows box each
time.
Now here's the problem: my target audience will be nerds, geeks and Berlin hipsters. So while retro would be OK, 1990's style Beepworld looks just won't cut it. I don't need embedded videos or anything fancy but e.g WebWonder looked rather plain in the design department. I could be wrong of course! Didn't immediately strike me as something fitting
my bill though.
Don't mind spending money but I'd really need blog roll,guest book, ping back and tagging features. Well, that sort of thing.

Can you explain what you mean? My impression (based on reading what's
offered by various website hosting companies) is that blogging works by one
having an appropriate app installed on a web server; one then uses a browser
to log in to the server and upload or edit content.
If that's what you mean, then it's a problem of finding an app that will
work with a RO browser, which I would think might be hard.

That's the normal way, yes. I've only had limited exposure to TYPO3
but Wordpress seems to be a better choice. I don't think you can access
either with Netsurf though so they'd be rather useless.

AIU there are a few content management systems which you can use under RO.
webWonder mentions blogging somewhere (drobe IIRC) but haven't seen anything
on the website itself. Most other links where dead (no surprise there).
Where talking about managing your own website, not a free blogging solution
like tumblr, blogger.com etc.

http://www.livejournal.com works with NetSurf - you need to be
HTML-literate to embed graphics etc., so I suspect there are
JavaScript-powered toolbars that I don't get to see. It does let you
rearrange page layout and so on by picking from a multiplicity of
user-defined 'themes'.

Note that a lot of LiveJournal's features are only available to those on
paid accounts, which I don't have - so I can't say whether Netsurf can
access them or not!

The late Paul Vigay was working on a blogging system called Electric Type
which he was using for his own blog. Knowing his love of RO I guess it
was a RO program. I believe it was his intention to release this but it
never happened. You can see how far he got with it here:

I'm not sure if my experience is relevant but FWIW:
As you can read, below, I have been using Blogspot. Free and easy to use before Google got its hands on it and 'improved' it. I never realised it was possible to post pics as well as drop edit files or write in real-time until I was forced to borrow a laptop. The interpretation of the 'dashboard' - which is what they call the user interface, appeared slightly differently and there were more pushable icons.
Googles first improvement cause my Iyo to become confused when rendering the dashboard, but I got around that because there was an alternative 'mobile' site.
However, having been dormant for a few weeks I have recently realised that I've nothing on my Iyo which will open the dashboard. I can read the site but nothing else. So I write on the Iyo and transfer to a laptop via the network and upload with that.
I haven't been able to locate an alternative, free, hosting site yet and my generated traffic doesn't justify paying for one - I think.
(Incidentally, I bought one of those Android Scroll tablets from R-Comp. It allows me to access the dashboard, but when I try to edit/create a blog the optical keyboard won't appear!)
