Did I see something somewhere about an Acorn Credit card
or am I just imagining it?

No, you're not imagining it!

The Acorn Credit Card (now an Xemplar Credit Card I believe)
is supplied by MBNA bank.

(0800) 062062 for details.

Points get awarded for money spent, and are given to a nominated school.

But check the interest rate. Most cards with an identifiable source charge more than normal Visa/Access cards.

The Acorn/Xemplar credit card has rates of about 17.9%apr, which is about 5% less than
my Barclaycard. It used to be very competitive, now it's just competitive. However,
if (like me) you usually clear your account, it does have the advantage of no annual
charge!

It's lower then many others I have come across, 1.45 % for cash or credit,
they even give you payment holidays as well. Oh and no annual charge
currently.

They seem pretty efficent in operation.

Tha APR for the Acorn Credit Card that I have is 18.9% for transactions
and 13.9% for cash. There are no nnual fees either. That compares pretty well,
I should say.

Cheers,
Dave.

I'm not sure whether it was a good idea to switch the branding
from Acorn to Xemplar. Are there really any devoted *Xemplar* fans?

AFAIK Apple has its own branded credit card but Acorn's has gone over to
Xemplar.

Unless you forget to make the minimum payment in which case they slap a
ukp 5 charge on your account each time. It only happened to me once,
I complained loudly and they refunded the charge.

BTW, it is now the "Xemplar" card rather than the "Acorn" card. When my
current "Acorn" card expires/dies I will probably switch to a different card.

I get very vociforous about credit cards and the lack of security.
Try Royal Bank of Scotland Mastercard which uses your photo and sig
printed in the back of the card. Enough to satisfy the more
assiduous French supermarket checkout and the rates are lower.
In a couple of years we may have chips in the cards too, something
Europe is used too.

IMHO you pay high rates of interest because many credit card companies
balance the losses through fraud against higher general charges. If they cut fraud they couldnt justify this.

Acorn should introduce a Loyalty card with credit.....and a chip :-))

Perhaps we should drop a few hints to MBNA that we might all desert if they
change the logo on the Cards!

Can anyone help? I am looking for an Acorn version of the font which is
available on other platforms. It is called Macintosh and is the Art
Nouveau(?) style which has recently slipped back into fashion. Any
information gratefully received.
While I'm here has anyone got or can point me at an Egyptian style font
which I need to make certificates for a project on the Ancient Egyptians at
school?
Cheers

Dalmation Publications have an Ancient Scripts font
pack which includes hieroglyphs (and instructions
written by me ;-))

Contact TAG Richards (who did all the hard work)

Like the cover of the Non Designers Design Book?

Try Mackintosh from iSV - Font pack 298, not identical but
perhaps 'an interpretation of ...'

Mmm... I'd be surprised if there is one.

If you mean Rennie MacKintosh (note the K), it's an ITC font, recently
released on Mac/PC. It's also obviously Art Deco (geometric) rather than
Art Nouveau (flowing curves).

You may get vaguely similar ones...

There are several "Egyptian"-ish style fonts around - presumably you mean
something which looks like it's written on natural materials (eg Papyrus),
in which case Papyrus is probably the font you're after.

If in trouble, Edward Detyna at EFF can usually help.

You could try the Internet Font Archives for PC/Mac fonts which you might
convert to Acorn.

I haven't seen the font myself, but Mackintosh's designs are generally
considered to belong to Art Nouveau rather than Art Deco, despite the
fact that many of them are severely geometric. There are other examples
of geometric Art Nouveau design. The difference between the two styles is
rather more than just geometric vs. flowing lines. It's also complicated
by the fact that "Art Deco" is now used to cover virtually all 20s and
30s design including both real Art Deco and Modernism.

I would be very interested to see the font in question, as I'm very much
an Art Nouveau fan. Does anyone know of a Web site which uses it?

It looks very good indeed. I think you should definitely finish it. It is
very similar to the font used on the cover of the Non-Designer's Design
Book which someone mentioned earlier in this thread. I haven't seen the
iSV Mackintosh font but it's probably very similar.
