I've been trying to look at the following site
It fails, totally, with Fresco and with Oregano 2, appears to download well
until it fails with - Internal error no stack for trap handler.
My version of Oregano 2 is v2.2.18 rev.3: Oct 13 2003, and there does not
seem to be a later one.
(I have a feeling that Peter Young is going to contact me !!)
Has anyone ideas on the best web browser for RISCOS ?

NetSurf - but that site, though it displays very well, uses JS for its
functioning, so I'd try with Firefox IIWY.

Not helpfully over this one, I regret :-(
> Has anyone ideas on the best web browser for RISCOS ?
In general, NetSurf, but this won't work with this site. It's still
being very much developed, and goes from strength to strength, IMHO.
RISC OS Firefox - 2.0.0.13 (April 2008 - R5) - works well with this
site, albeit pretty slowly.
With best wishes,
Peter.

However, if you try to get past the home page, it complains that it
can't do this if JavaScript is turned off.

Oregano2 falls over with that error more and more these days. I find
Oregano2 utterly useless now.

That is the latest O2. It would have been superseded by Oregano3 but that
got pulled, insufficient market.

I have "sold out", as have many others, the best way to browse on RISC OS is
not to. I find the browser hassles go away with IE7 or Firefox3, and more
than that open up areas of interest otherwise impossible on RISC OS.
In my view browsing on RISC OS is a lost cause. (I have feeling Paul Vigay
will be contacting me.) It all hinges on individual usage.

It works on Oregano 1 as far as getting to the hompage if you set the
faking to IE5. Set to Netscape it tells you to get a new browser. ;-)
But entering the postcode complains that Javascript is needed - so just
the usual with RISC OS browsers.

I find Netsurf (2.0 r4528, which is recent but not the latest build)
is pretty good for general browsing; I use Firefox 2.0.0.12 when NS
fails (usually because of lack of javascript); having an Iyonix helps.
I have O2 but never use it nowadays.

I have an XP laptop and use it for sites which require Flash, which is
about 10% of the time. So I still use RISC OS for most browsing.

True. However, I think it's important to persevere with RO browsers,
and improve them where possible. The pace of Netsurf development seems
to have picked up recently, and current versions are noticeably
quicker at rendering than older ones, which is heartening. The latest
RO Firefox is a big improvement on previous versions too. Now if we
could have up-to-date Flash support...!

I would agree, for my usage, with David Pitt. Many of the
most important sites, for me, require extensive Javascript
and check for supported browsers. Faking, I find, is not
adequate for this.

Flash is irrelevant to me. Most of the sites I visit that
have significant flash also have a "click here to bypass the
introduction" button, which I always use.
Rendering speed is not crucial either, as there are normally
not a lot of graphics to be dealt with.
I am well aware from other postings by the Netsurf people
that huge amounts of work would be involved in making
Netsurf do Javascript, but if I were one the team, (which I
am not, and never could be) I would regard Javascript as the
absolute priority.
There are, I believe, a number of security protocols that
some financial institutions use that were not available on
earlier versions of Firefox, though that is sorted now.
These would need to be incorparated into Netsurf too, to
make it really useful to me.

Far more important to have up to date Javascript, IMHO. The lack of it
forces me onto my PC for the *majority* of the sites I visit.
If you wish pretty moving pictures etc all the RO machines are too slow
anyway.

There are more important things to get done first, before JavaScript.
(Like getting it to render the page correctly before JavaScript then
fiddles with it, for a start.)
There's so much work to be done to get JavaScript, aiming so high will
just yield poor results: you need to get the foundations right before
building a tower block.

Flash has increased in relevance here as the BBC iPlayer uses it. This is
good in that the thing is not tied to the Real Player and now works with
Firefox on Linux. The radio on demand items now have reasonable bit rates
making the iPlayer very usable, in theory that is, I have yet to give it a
good work out.
I have been recording the Radio 3 Mahler Gergiev concerts using a FreeView
tuner in the PC, the iPlayer should now be a satisfactory alternative. How
far would any of this get with RISC OS.

www.riscos.info is your friend
For clarity , for A9, Iyonix, Omega and VirtualRPC ( Emulated
StrongArm version) you can use 2.0.0.14-1 , whilst for a RiscPC it is
2.0.0.12-1

Don't be put off by the bit that says, "It is likely to be unstable
and may crash your machine." I regularly download test builds (1) and
I don't think this has ever happened.
For the first-time installation you do need to do what it says in the
ReadMe file, or NetSurf will complain, and rightly so.
(1) There are various scripts knocking around, of which I have one,
that will backup the current version, download the new one, unpack it
and run it.
HTH,
Running the newly installed FF 2.0.0.14-1. it appears on the icon bar,
starts to open the Firefox window and then crashes. I have installed a
clean unzipped copy (not an overwrite of previous versions) and the
latest UnixLib !System file. I had my homepage set to Google under
v12, not Mozilla.org. Attempts to run the retro-installed 2.0.0.12 now
fail in the same way.
I have the stderr file produced by the .14-1 crashes: where should I
send it? Any other advice appreciated (apart from 'never upgrade if
something works...'). Cheers

First off I take it you have either an Iyonix or A9?
Secondly shift-select on the !Boot directory, go to Choices and then
look for a directory called Mozilla. Rename this directory to
something else , reboot and the try Firefox again and see what
happens.

As others have already said,
http://www.netsurf-browser.org/downloads/testbuilds
Don't worry too much about the warnings of instability: most of us use the
development versions without problems, and they are more capable than
version 1.2.

Not out of the woods yet sadly. Tried this procedure several times
with both .14-1 and .12-1; the mozilla homepage either completes
loading, but crashes as soon as any interaction is attempted (such as
clicking on the homepage button on the top menu bar) or fails while
loading with a 'Fatal signal received: segmentation error'.

I've managed to resuscitate Firefox 2 RISC OS release 1 dated 1 Dec
06, which seems to work OK. So my current problem seems to be with the
later versions only (although as mentioned earlier, 2.0.0.12 was
working perfectly well before I installed .14-1).
