Hello,

I'm looking at purchasing an Iyonix, so I can devote build time to
RISC OS Open.
(Basically the machine will compile a daily build of the RISC OS Open
source code.)

If anyone has one collecting dust somewhere, please get in touch.

Best Wishes,
Rob Heaton - r...@robheaton.co.uk

FWIW, I've had success in using RPCEmu under Linux to build the ROOL code.
It's reasonably quick too (compared to my RPC). I haven't timed it, but I'd
guess something like an hour to build the whole tree on an Athlon XP 2600
(so fairly old). I just put on the standard boot sequence, unpacked the
recent C/C++ CD, and away it went.

Obviously it's still emulating a RPC, so you can't test RISC OS 5 kernel
stuff so easily (until someone fixes the IOMD port).

Note: we also have an autobuilder which you could use to simplify the build
process. It has two parts:

1. the client software that actually performs the build and runs on the RISC
OS machine.

2. the server software that you put onto a Linux box and set up with a cron
job or two.

I'd be happy to run through installation and configuration in order to
refine the documentation (it's a bit rough and ready on the documentation
front).

In a nutshell, you set up a cron job to fetch and unpack the latest cvs
repository archive from our site (these are rebuilt daily in the early
hours), and another cron job to watch for autobuild jobs being started by a
client. Downloading our cvs repository archive each night might be a bit
excessive. We could do with making that bit more efficient (ROOL actually
only need to rsync the changed files across, but you won't have permissions
for that).

Thus, the client (you can have multiple autobuild client machines going in
parallel) can get hold of the latest sources and do its build. You probably
want to remove some of the final steps where it uploads the results to our
web server!

On the whole though, it's good that each build (IOMD, Tungsten, OMAP, disc,
etc) can be kicked-off simply by running an obey file on the build machine.

If you were running Linux and RPCemu, there's no reason you couldn't have
the autobuild server and client on the same physical machine. If only
someone would finish the IOMD build off so we can run that properly in
RPCemu!

Failing all that, there's always !Builder which is in the RiscOS.Apps part
of the various source code archives. Setting that up and doing a build is
minimal effort (or you can bypass it and call srcbuild directly - which is
what the autobuilder does).

Thanks,

Steve

Many thanks for the replies Theo & Steve.

I never thought the source would build in RPCEmu, something just told
me "Theres No Way!"
I'll have a play tonight.

I have an Ubuntu box running here 24/7 anyway, so it's good it can be
put to use while it's idle.
I did try building the source code from the OMAP3 branch on my SA Risc
PC, it ran for 2.5 hours,
then failed complaining of missing fonts. (Not looked through the
build log yet.)

Steve, where can I get hold of the autobuild system?
I did search the RISC OS Open site, and kept getting the page asking
for machine time donors.

Thanks,
Rob.

We only ever released it on a CD sold at the London show. I'll speak to you
in email to sort this out for you.

Can you drop an email to in...@riscosopen.org to remind me?

There's one here if it's of any use to you.

Thanks Matthew,
I'm going to investigate using RPCEmu to compile the code before
spending any money
plus I'm hoping that fairly soon I can use my Beagle Board to do it!

Rob.
