The person who usually writes stuff down wasn't at the meeting this
month, and as no one has jumped in, the answer is unfortunately no :-(
The good news is ROOL had a Beagleboard hooked up to the projector
using a DVI cable so we could all see it boot up RISC OS :-)
The bad news is the Beagleboards that ROOL had with them were the
older Revision B boards, which meant that USB didn't work. They were
therefore limited to using a serial connection from a Mac to type
commands in. However this did include type *Desktop which showed the
normal RISC OS desktop, but with no mouse not much could be done from
there!
There was discussion of the minor incompatibilities between the ARM
Cortex-A8 CPU and earlier ARMs used by RISC OS, which means some dort
of Aemulor type program might be needed to get all old software
working. ROOL didn't seem to worried about this.
The exciting thing is that there are machines coming out that use the
Beagleboard (e.g. the Touchbook) so there is the possibility of new
native RISC OS hardware.

Indeed! And thanks for the report.

Here are a few pictures of my rev. C3 beagle board and associated
items.
The first one just shows its own splash screen.

The second shows the RISC OS boot message.

The Third shows the beagle board, SD card, USB hub and the serial
console cable.

For RISC OS the USB hub needs to be plugged into the 'A' flat USB
port. While the default port for Linux seems to be the On-The-Go port.
I power the Beagle board from an external 5v regulated plug pack.
Actually the power pack and the USB hub are the ones supplied with my
DevKit8000, which is similar to the Beagle but has 4" touch LCD and a
network port.
I have a usb keyboard, mouse and flash memory device plugged into the
hub. I was delighted to find that the flash memory device was
identified and mounted.
I have not used a RISC OS 5 machine before and I am unfamiliar with
how RISC OS file typing is implemented for fat32 drives. I have
discovered its not the same as HostFS on Virtual Acorn. I copied a
bunch of files from VA to the flash disk using windows, so all the
files had ',xxx' file typing, but this isn't what RISC OS 5 seems to
expect on a fat32 file system so that didn't work.
When I get a moment I will fix that up and try again.
The serial console goes to HyperTerminal on my XP Laptop. This is
required so you can type *DESKTOP once it has booted. Despite being
plugged in the USB keyboard doesn't function before the desktop
starts.
Also all output is currently sent to the serial port as well as the
screen. This probably slows the desktop down if it fills the serial
port output buffer.
The fourth picture is the desktop showing the rom apps and the content
of my USB flash memory.

RISC OS its self is booted from the SD card inserted into the Beagle
board.
The fifth picture is of the DevKit8000 Linux login. Described as a
"Chinese beagle board clone with NIC, touch LCD etc" the current RISC
OS ROM won't boot on it, but I am going to look into that, as I am
more interested in the DevKit8000 than I am in the Beagleboard since
it has on board networking. Without the LCD its not much more
expensive. With the LCD, power supply, hub, SD card, lead set and all
its about twice as much.

The last picture is the Beagle and DevKit8000 side by side.

That's brilliant.
Please keep us informed of any further developments and information.

Indeed. Just the pictures are a bit "huge" (for me).

Good stuff, thanks.
I suggest you put those pictures and details up as an article on Drobe
or Iconbar where they will get more of an audience than here.
They will be of interest to a lot of people who may be ignoring this
thread thinking it is only about ROUGOL!
