You havn't got !Bloxed there, this is a cool tetris variation
with lots of addons such as power blocks. It also has a leathal 2

nice as well. Personally I still play columns of a very old ArcWorld cover

I find Hextris quite boring, maybe too easy.
I've written Tetrhex on Falcon, which is more interesting since there
are special pieces (if you know someone who has a Falcon, you can see
the demo version). I'll port it to the RiscPC and improve it; I think
it will be shareware too. But it will take a moment: I've just started
programming on the RiscPC (since Saturday); now I need to find documents
and languages.

I agreee. Bloxed is my No. 1 Fave. It's cool, and I (as a rule) generally don't
have time for games like tetris...

Not to forget:
Bloxed
BIATetris
IMHO BIATetris was one of the *best ever* tetris games I've played. Does
anyone know if it will work on the RPC (if so, where can I get it from?)
Staka's impressive but not that playable. I love CTetris, just for it's
simplicity. At the moment I am playing Bloxed the most (just downloading the
latest version..) I have probably played the others at some point, but havn't
kept them.
Anyone fancy
i) setting up a ftp archive of these tetris games (or is there one already?)
ii) Having a competition similar to the SR2000 one, but much simpler ie. your
high-score. The game to play on could be decided just by a majority vote of
the best tetris game.

Tertis!
Everyone I know rates this as *the* tetris.
It is sooo slick, and the mode where you progress through levels
takes away the monotonicity that tetris tends to exhibit.
The standard that all tetri (pluralis:) should be judged by!
Then there is that (almost) one-liner tetris - now that's
a fascinating piece of BASIC.
Are

My consciene is plagued by the fact that I never got around
to submitting the obligatory stick of rhubarb...
Hatris is of course the coolest game in existance. Well at least in concept anyway.
Whoever thought it up either needs a Nobel Prize or needs to visit a rather good
shrink.

Could someone tell me where I can get BIATetris from please? I need something for
my Tetris fix. Have just obtained Bloxed from a Surrey Uni address. D/load was
VERY slow, but by the time I had got around to de-archiving it, I'd just got back
from the pub. Not the best state to play such a game in!
An ftp archive sounds like a good idea. Maybe one for our Student/commercial bods?
I don't know if the idea of millions (?) of people ftp-ing into my dail-up account
machine would be a good idea! But what would be a REAL froopy idea.... someone
writing or adapting a tetris game to be played over the Internet, or via machine
to machine. A simple version of this already exists in that you can sometimes
challange the Sysop of a BBS service to play a game, but you do rather need a fast
modem.
Perhaps someone is already working on it? Hope so!
Cheers.

... Noah! Come quick! There's water in the basement!
SO someone write a multi-player networked Tertis clone, Ever played Xtet42
under UNIX? now thats fun!
Fix ? That's the correct behaviour (IMHO - and it's my opinion that counts).
Though you could make a good argument that the drop auto-repeat should be
switched off when a piece lands until you lift and repress the space bar.
All Tetris games have a slightly different feel, that will determine which
versions you like.
As an example, in Bloxed the pieces jump between vertical positions a block
at a time, where in Tertis they slide 1 pixel at a time. This was a
deliberate decision on my part - I felt that I liked how it looked when they
jumped, and it also gave you more time to slide the pieces sideways.
I'm not saying Tertis did it wrong, I'm only saying I did it how I like, and
the Tertis author(s) did it how they like.
: Now the controls in Tertis are AWESOME!, only problem is you can slide a
: piece further over than 1 square once its hit, in bloxed you can fiddle around
: for hours sliding things backwards & forwards.
: The level nature of Tertis also makes it great fun, exdpecially when you drop
: the last line with only a line left on the screen!
Tertis' level scheme is probably nicer for 1 player in that it sets up
challenges - you always want to know what the next level is.
: SO someone write a multi-player networked Tertis clone, Ever played Xtet42
: under UNIX? now thats fun!
I started to write a networked version of Bloxed, but it isn't complete. I
really want to recode it from scratch as I've learnt a lot more about
networking and X since (or maybe that should be during) the first attempt.
I got to the stage where 2 players on different machines could connect and
play with lines being passed - both players get smooth response locally,
although their view of the other player may suffer network lag - the
problem was that the networking side would sometimes crash for no readily
apparent reason.
Some technical details. I wanted to ensure that both players got smooth
response - it's essential in a game of this type. Therefore opening 2
displays from 1 X program runing on 1 machine was unsatisfactory for all
but the fastest of LANs. I wanted it to be possible for players in England
and Australia to play with no handicap for the remote player. For the same
reason TCP/IP is not suitable (TCP/IP provides a reliable data stream, but
this means if a packet gets lost then all subsequent packets are delayed,
even if the lost packet is not essential). So I used UDP/IP for
communication. This allows packets to be lost, so I can chose which
packets have to be resent, and which cen be forgotten. This is the most
flexible system - it's also the system xpilot uses - and that has much
more data to transmit. Another advantage of using my own networking rather
than a remote X display is it cuts down the amount of network traffic
significantly (maybe even low enough to play over a modem).
One of the reasons I want to rewrite is to provide a more modular
structure with the networking, gameplay and display parts separated out to
allow, in particular, alternate display routines to be used. A text only
display could be provided through curses (my first attempt to write Bloxed
was with C and curses), or machine specific displays for the Arc or PC
*spit*.
Unfortunately, although I'd like to do all this, other things (like my
thesis) are taking priority.
One final comment about multi-player tetris, if you have line passing
as in Bloxed, then the number of pieces on screen will almost never
decrease (assuming players always try to complete multiple lines to get
them passed). This means that after relatively few pieces someone must
be dead. The powerblocks in Bloxed change this dramatically, they allow
large numbers of blocks to be removed from the game completely. This is
essential for long 2 player games.
- Steven
There's a BBS door game called Stack'em which is not too bad an implementation
As I remember, it worked quite reasonalby over a slow (2400) modem too.
Probably the most compact implementation ever is Extra Rheolism, weighing in
at 256 bytes of BBC BASIC (so there's a whole byte for future enhancements).
To find out more, check out:
http://www.mantis.co.uk/~olly/rheolism.html
Or if you don't have WWW access, ftp it from:
ftp.mantis.co.uk:/pub/users/olly/rheolism.bin
Worryingly, it's more playable than many Tetris variants I've seen.

Caution: Contains head-enhancing device.
Welltris - now there was a game....
don't suppose anyone's working on it? (cos I can't program) *hopeful look*
If you didn't ever see it, it was tetris played in a well - looking down into
a square well with the sides being tetris boards. The blocks (up to 7-8 sqs)
appeared at the top of the well and you could rotate them or move them around
the well, when they dropped they slid down onto the floor and connected with
whatever was there. If you got a line across the well floor in any direction,
it disappeared in standard tetris fashion. If any part of the block didn't make
it to the floor (i.e. got stuck on the wall) then that side was blocked for 3
moves. Block all the sides, you lose the game.
Oh, in addition there was the undocumented feature ;-) of block splitting - if
you dropped a block that was sitting on a corner, each part slid down as if it
was independant.... very complex to use properly.
Now that game was the best tetris ever for several reasons. Firstly it was
about 2-3 times as difficult as tetris *mentally* - not because it was faster.
Secondly, you had so much more room to do stuff with the blocks - it didn't
get as repetitious as tetris does (whatever variant - after you played welltris
nothing is as good!)
Thirdly, it lasted for so long, cos you had to be in a really ghastly position
to lose all the walls - unlike tetris, where one single miss can make the whole
thing go bad. (No, I can play tetris very well thanx! ;-)
Oh well - that was the only game I really miss now I've got my arc... *sigh*
anyone agree?
seeya (not till september!)
al.
Ok the score is 5015 at level 84.
See you on the high score table ;-)
