Well I wouldn't say Garpevine fails to connect at all but it is very
hit and miss here.
When I had cause recently to speak to Andrew at RComp about something
else I did mention this issue and the fact that Parmesan worked all
the time/99.9% of the time and Andrew did say they had a some people
with the same issue but they always came back to say it was now
working. I must admit Parmesan does seem the more reliable application
to connect using my set up and this does seem to point to some issue
with the handshaking/set up of Grapevine but how to prove it and give
RComp information is the bit that needs answering.

A straw poll would be useful, e.g if people can connect with Parmesan
or can/ not with GV.

Although I have not used it in anger for a while, i just this minute
checked, and connected instantly.
Some people have reported your problem, which I believe is due to
server loading (and maybe the faster working of windows machines
muscling in at busy times) I am connecting via PlusNet broadband,
with a good, fast local connection.

Agree a good connection is required and mine is 4MB with BTInternet.
The only other thing with your statement is why does Parmesan connect
all of the time then?
When Grapevine is stuck at the "Connected to MS passport - waiting for
login response" message I can fire up Parmesan and get in straight
away.
Similarly just tried Grapevine over the last 20 minutes and it hasn't
connect once in 10 attempts. So far Parmesan has connected 5 out of 5
instantly.
There is something in the Grapevine code that isn't performing under
certain conditions that does in Parmesan and what really is required
is for some way of getting debug info for RComp to utilise.

I've just tried again and get the same results like you. Though I
always prefer Parmesan and did when it first came out.
When I had problems connecting before ( ages, ago ) were insistent
that the app was fine and it was only me.
It turned out when I contacted Alan Wrigley, some other users ( very
small ) had problems connecting.
In fact he sent me a trace version and there was a bug/problem which
infected some users and got an upgrade.
Alan was really helpful.

Brian,
Perhaps you contacting Andrew again might help here.
I'd also be willing to try the test code to help trace the issue as
well if required.

I've gone to his website and contacted him via the web's link. So,
will wait and see.
GV fails all the time I try it now :(

If the answer is wrong, you have asked an incorrect question.
Dare To Be Different. Use RISC OS (http://www.riscos.com).

Apols if it's been suggested or it's too obvious (have missed loads of
news due to demon downtime)
I recently tried GV after a few months break. Couldn't connect to MSN.
Remembered I had signed up for a .NET Passport.
Re-signed up for a passport and it now connects fine. I think the
passport expires if not used for a while.
Just a thought.

Well it's not that here as Parmesan works and so does Grapevine once
in a blue moon. The issue is reliable connections rather than not
connect full stop.
Anyway Brian is trying a version that may help track the issue down
but thanks for the suggestion.

For me, Grapevine 2.12 connects every time all the time without any
problem and has done so for years. Parmesan works too.

Following a tip from Andrew at R-Comp, the only way I can get my
Iyonix to connect to MSN with Grapevine is to go to
!Boot.Choices.IRC.Grapevine and delete this Grapevine folder before
loading the Grapevine app. The Grapevine folder is regenerated in Boot
when the app is loaded. The login details then have to be re-entered
each time MSN is used, but at least it connects every time now. I'm
still hoping for a permanent fix from R-Comp.

But thats hardly convenient !
Is it applicable only to you ?
When I had problems before with GV, RComp insisted that there wasn't
anything wrong with the app... then it turns out after I contacted
Alan Wrigley and using a trace version there were issues with it and
some people and an upgrade came out and worked until now.
I only raised the point as its an app which I paid for and now seems
reluctant to connect when it should. Parmesan, seems to work all the
time and general feedback is does all the time for everyone.
