I'm having trouble accessing a PDF book made available at
http://www.archive.org/details/modelyachtsmodel00waltiala

Neither the black and white or colour(?) PDF files seem to load on any
RISC OS PDF viewer; Ghostscript 8.53 reports "Error: /invalid access in
--setfileposition--" and "****ERROR: Unable to prcoess JPXDecode data"
respectively.

I managed to get a few pages 'read online' with Firefox, but it crashed
on two occasions before I could reach the section I need, "How to make
the sails and set them" (pp73)

I can access the plain text version, but with instructions like
"Thisdiagramshows howtocuttheheadofthemainsail;
thedottedlineshowshowthesail wouldbeifcutstraight,therefore
cutstraightfromatob,thenslant
offtodatrathermorethanmidwayfromatoc." it isn't all that
useful!

I haven't discovered how to download the book, so can't try, but maybe
PDFView http://homepage.ntlworld.com/janus-g/PDFView.zip will open the
pdf. It sometimew works when all else fails.

Colour is here:
http://ia350605.us.archive.org/1/items/modelyachtsmodel00waltiala/modelyachtsmodel00waltiala.pdf

That works OK in evince and acrored on Linux (Fedora 6).

Check that you have all the file - it should end %%EOF

I've had problems before with files on websites archived on archive.org
where the last byte got lost - which caused programs like gunzip to complain
about corrupt files.

The current version of Ghostscript (8.54, released in 2006) displays
text and diagrams in the colour file correctly.

Basically, the file is a sequence of non-standard JPEGs (probably from
Adobe Photoshop). They happen to be displayed correctly by Adobe
Reader, but they do not conform to the JPEG standard.

!PDF and ArtWorks cope with the colour file as such, but since !PDF
uses the standard JPEG code and ArtWork uses RISC OS to render the
JPEGs, both display the same colourful mess. If it is any consolation,
Xara Xtreme does no better. In fact, if you tried to display these
JPEGs on their own using Windows programs, most would display the same
as !PDF and ArtWorks, for instance the standard Windows photo gallery.

These Adobe-corrupted JPEGs (usually CMYK JPEGs) are quite a nuisance,
even on PCs. I know a few people who often send such JPEGs around.
When displayed by the standard JPEG viewer under Windows, they look a
complete mess.

The PDF or B/W PDF links under 'View the book' - or, more usefully, the
'View all files HTTP' option, which sometimes seems to work when the
via-Google direct links don't:
http://ia350605.us.archive.org/1/items/modelyachtsmodel00waltiala/

No, it just freezes and displays nothing, as does !PDF. Ghostscript is
the only program that provided any useful information as to the actual
error.

However, I had a brainwave as I walked past the library, and realised
that I could probably use the 'People's Network' there to access the
files via Windows-approved software(!)

It worked - although the printers didn't... - so I now have a neat
little pencil sketch of the relevant diagram, showing the correct cut of
a gaff mainsail. I even now have a gaff mainsail securely laced onto
its spar, although I'm still a bit dubious about its cut!

Alt-PrtSc would have created a picture fo a screen, on the windows
clipboard. Start Paint and use Edit->Paste to bring the clipboard image
into that app, then File->SaveAs somewhere. Then email the file to
yourself.

Using NetSurf, r8378, I can't see either option on that page. Maybe one
has to join, and log-in?

Yes, that _does_ display links to various files but, as the file in
question is 8.5MB and, as the concensus seems to be that it won't open
on a RPC, there little point in downloading it, out of curiosity,

Even Ghostscript 8.54 doesn't seem to be able to cope with this one :-(

http://www.archive.org/details/playpictorial00unkngoog

I get the same "****ERROR: Unable to prcoess JPXDecode data", presumably
from the same Adobe source.

I have a habit of downloading and storing items that I think might be
useful. I put them in a directory brilliantly called USEFUL. Trouble is when
I come to try them I usually forget what they are for. One of these is PDF
View. It is version alpha5 (xpdf3.02) (9 Apr 2007). This sometimes works for
difficult PDF.

Using this I could display the front cover, a couple of times it froze the
Iyonix, but displaying the help file alongside the opening page,(used a
1280x960 display) I could step through a page at a time. (Right Ctrl and
Right Arrow) Took about ten seconds a page.

I looked at the first few pages, then tried the Forward 10 Pages. The
quality of the image is excellent.

Is this any help?

Not for the file I was talking about in my latest post,
http://ia331427.us.archive.org/3/items/playpictorial00unkngoog/playpictorial00unkngoog.pdf

With Aemulor running (i.e. a 28Mb Wimpslot) the application just quits
and leaves an hourglass running; after quitting Aemulor, PDFView simply
hung up (~30 sec).

Oh well, I probably need to go to the British Library anyway....

Tut tut, surely you know the difference between "b" and "B"?

At least you didn't write milli-bit.

I think most of us do. ;-)

One is a little b and the other is a big B.

Big B is used to start a sentence, like...
"Blimey, Five years for that little crime..."

Big B has other uses, in Nouns and things, but that's all too complicated
to think about this early in the day.

Little b get put everywhere else big B is not used, but a b is still
required.

Interestingly, context is is important, so I knew exactly what Harriet
meant, so the size of her b wasn't an issue.

D.

I thought "Little B" was a record by the Shadows
