Love this app - but is there a way of stopping it putting my various
folders in alphabetical order within the main list if I do a sort? I'd
like all my folders at the top of the list in alphabetical order. And
regardless of what sorting method I choose they tend to end up scattered
around. Of course I can move them afterwards.

I could add the feature if you'd like - it shouldn't be particularly
hard.

I've just sort-of got out of the habit of tweaking BM, as it doesn't
support NetSurf, and I can't really afford the time to get familiar
enough with NetSurf to add the NetSurf-side stuff that would allow BM
to support it.

That's a shame :-(

BM was one of my best applications when I was using Fresco a lot
and I do miss it with NetSurf.

I've tried putting an 'a' or '1' in front of the folder name but that
doesn't seem to work. There are also some odds and sods that don't seem to
sort alphabetically. But look normal.

Out of curiosity, why?

In the RISC OS world, site maintainers are still stuck having to use nasty
layout solutions to cater for users who won't migrate up to CSS-capable
browsers. In any other target market, it's generally OK to assume that
those not using 'modern' browsers (anything from the past 5+ years or so)
will be happy to see a degraded (but readable) site as a result of a lack of
CSS. For RISC OS users, we're still forced to use tables-based layout
methods if a significant chunk of the audience are to see the site as
designed.

NetSurf has long remembered the last download location and defaulted to
that for subsequent downloads. The reason that feature request is still
open is that there is no way to configure a default download location.

It probably helps to try the software to see if a feature has been
implemented, rather than relying on the state of tickets in the feature
tracker.

Am I missing something..? :)) I use both !Fresco and
!Netsurf a lot (Risc PC with an SA'd RISC OS 4.02) as
my main - and still only(!) - machine..

In both cases, !Bookmaker accesses either that is
installed on the icon bar - even one after the other
after the one before..

Transferring urls is a simple click with !Fresco - a
little more cumbersome 'lifting' of the current url
from !Netsurf's top address bar and dropping into
!Bookmaker - but either method gets results..

Truth to tell !Fresco is convenient, fast(ish) and gets
most everywhere (*) - compared to !Netsurf's (usually
one of the latest !Netsurf 3's development ones). which
is pretty, usually accurately laid out, but almighty slow
and with a seizure making 'flashing off/on' with this
lowly 64MB platform.

Only problem with the latest !Netsurf's is an inability
to reclaim unused memory, often leading to an unceremonious
dumping of a site and all temp stored contents. Often
happens when trying to 'save' an ssl 'page' to a directory.

That and, unlike !Fresco, no immediate 'on the button'
printing with !Netsurf, of course..

..but as for Nick's !Bookmaker - seems to work OK ..at
least in it's simple sorting fashion - although, as Dave
says.... ?? :))

Hope I've got the correct end of the comments...? :))

(*) Many of the larger sites, (inc Barclay's, Amazon.co.uk
and now, slowly, even USofA's Amazon.com), are doing away
with most if not all MS Javascript - making their sites
more accessible to both !Fresco and !Netsurf as well as
other simpler browsers, or those cut down mobile versions
for the person on the move, who need speed and information
rather than vainly pretty looks.

(Amazon.com also has another site for those who's browsers
are clinically less able to accept their full site - oh that
Ebay would do the same.

For those selling Acorn kit hereabouts - as an sole RISC OS
Platform User I can't get at the very RISC OS things I might
be interested in as I'm unable to use MS Javascript - nor any
kind of PayPal, period)!

I explained why that request is not closed in the part of my reply that
you snipped.

Looking at the date of that request, it predates by almost a year the
version 2.0 release. In the light of that, I don't think it's
unrealistic to suggest that you try a more recent version.

Should have said if I'm forced to use a RISC OS browser it will usually be
Oregano 1. Mostly I'm sensible and use Firefox - on the PC.

Not interested in 'site design'. IMHO black print on a white background
would suit me just fine.

Ah! Well, that's different :)

That particular ticket contains two requests:

1) For there to be a configurable default download location.
2) For the last used download location to be remembered and used for
subsequent downloads.

Only the second of these features is implemented, hence why we've not
closed the ticket.

So does NetSurf. You're probably using the default toolbar. It is
trivial to add and remove icons from the toolbar.

1. Click Menu over the toolbar

2. Select "Edit toolbar"
A second row of icons appears
Drag the icons around to arrange the toolbar as suits you

3. When you're done, click Menu over the toolbar

4. Select "Edit toolbar" again to toggle toolbar customisation mode off

There's more info in the documentation.

I also am able to use Bookmaker with any browser on my RiscPC. IIRC,
the trick was to make sure that one of bookmakers supported browsers
was loaded (or maybe just "seen") when first setting up the app using !
BMConfigure. In Bookmaker's Preferences window, I also have the
"Browser" option set to Shared.
Hope this helps.

Oh indeed.

I well remember one site which was pretty ok with Oregano - apart from
some of the 'buttons' not working. Went to it with Firefox on the PC only
to find there was a coloured pattern behind the text making it very
difficult to read. ;-)

Well.. blow me! ..or something! So it does... doh! :))

Last time I attempted printing from !Netsurf's menu,
it just collapsed in a heap ..following which I was
advised in these august columns, by The Great and The
Good, that printing from !Netsurf didn't work and to
save my pages out as !Drawfiles and use the very
useful !DrawPrint facility to print..

..which very useful app works fine enough although
clearly not as (scaleably) immediate as !Fresco's
'on the button'..

Go on ..tell me that printing was added to/sorted with
!Netsurf many iterations ago and I just didn't think
to look further.. !#;))

It will be a decided advantage for some site pages -
especially when wishing to hardcopy an onsite order
form confirmation.

Thanks, Michael, for the timely reminder... :))

Yes.

In particular, you've missed that NetSurf's "Add to Hotlist" and "Show
Hotlist" buttons don't work with BookMaker. While there is a
work-around to allow you to add a page to the hotlist, it's a hack.

You're also missing the fact that if you try to use NetSurf's native
hotlist, it bears no resemblence to what's in BookMaker.

common the fact that the hotlist is stored as HTML, hence they can use

If you don't have any of these browsers, BookMaker won't be able to

Of course, Nick.. :))

As I've used !Bookmaker from it's inception, I haven't
acquired the habit of using !Netsurf's or any other
browser's hotlist, native or otherwise.

For me, !Bookmaker works more than well enough with
!Netsurf (inc bodge) or !Fresco, with either
momentarily loaded on the iconbar as needed..

As none of the iterations of !Bookmaker have broken
over the years, I haven't looked too much further
into it, just enjoyed a really useful app thanks to
the author, whomsoever he might be..

/spk file here in the name with Oregano 1 although the file said text but
dropping it into SparkFS worked just fine.

Well, Netsurf here correctly set the filetype to Archive, so it may
be a problem with your Mimemap settings.

Doubtful as it has a line detailing .spk

I've just been back to Nick's site and downloaded SABM/spk SABMFull/spk
and SABMHelp/spk. They all arrived as DATA.

But does it have a line starting with 'application/archive'? That's how
the server announces it in the HTTP-headers.

This is something I discovered a good while ago. All you need to do is
select(highlight) the data file, press Ctrl and T, (or menu, SABMFull,
Set Type), clear the word 'data' and type in the word 'archive' then
press Return. That will change it to a zipfile/SparkFile which you can
open in the usual way.

Worked here just by dropping it into SparkFS. No need to change anything.
But after having done that the file icon changed from text to archive.

Blimey that a bit of a performance, I just drag 'n dropped the archive on
the SparkFS icon bar icon.

My fathers brother did the rest.

Dunno about that matey...

There's a reference to .spk in the mimemap file, anything else is just
words 'innit.

application/zip Archive ddc .spk

So what you are saying is the person who wrote the mimemap file made a
complete (erection) of it.

# RISC OS Select; 1.07 (15 Mar 2004)

FWIW Frank, I've just modified the Mimemap file to contain...

application/archive Archive ddc .spk

Been to the Bookmaker site and re-downloaded, no different though, still
arrives as "Data"

The other bits are more important in this case. NetSurf will not look
at the .spk at all. The mapping is done based on the Mime type
announced by the server.

> application/zip Archive ddc .spk

> So what you are saying is the person who wrote the mimemap file made a

Not at all. Your MimeMap is fine. By definition, it can never contain
everything. For what it is worth, a web server could choose to deliver
a file of type application/dave-symes and nobody's MimeMap would have
a mapping for that. As far as I can see application/archive is not an
officially allocated standard Mime type, so I do not think that it is
a good choice for the server to use that type.

That change does not have any effect unless you reboot or issue a
*ReadMimeMap
command. Once you have done that you will see that it will download
with type Archive. Whether it is really worth while modifying one's
MimeMap file to cater for this one server that happens to use that
type is another matter.

Aha! That was the clincher *ReadMimeMap
Previously I'd just quit NetSurf, assuming when I re-ran it, it'd re-read
the Mimemap file.

Now downloads as Archive filetype.
Thanks for the pointer.

Dave

I often insert additional lines in the Mimemap file when needed.

No problem Nick.

It's great to see that such a good piece of software is still being
maintained.

No, NetSurf (along with any other sensible apps that need to convert between
MIME types, file extensions or file types) asks the MimeMap module, which in
turn handles the MimeMap file for them.

Since you're using an Argonet address still I'd guess it's a VIX inside
Voyager. There is a version for updating that.
I still use Voyager as a convenient toolbar for this sort of app. Bit
like a comfort blanket. ;-)

It isn't. I just added this to my version of the MimeMap file because
some servers appeared to use it.

Well, there's at least one other that uses it. Can't remember which one,
though.
