I've come across a free Java program called Jpgfdraw, which the author
claims is inspired by Acorn Draw.

It doesn't actually have RISC OS Draw loading or saving facilities (unless
someone feels like adding them) but the interface is quite similar - just
look at the screenshots. Its main selling point to the rest of the world is
it's designed to create figures in various forms for insertion into
TeX/LaTeX documents, but it'll do the usual formats too (SVG, EPS, PNG)

Should work on most platforms that have a Java system. See:

(also an interview with the author here:)

That looks interesting; thanks.

Interesting that the interviewee cites an example of someone who gave up
on TechWriter in favour of LaTeX, because the latter was less hassle...

:-)

(Looking at the context, it would have been an early version of
TechWriter, so it probably isn't a fair comparison these days).

Hmm, I suspect that depends on your point of view! (Never having used
TechWriter, I can't comment).

I actually came across it after I found TiKZ, a language for creating very
professional-looking graphics for LaTeX, and was looking for a sensible GUI
editor (TiKZ may be elegant, but life's too short to draw figures by
describing them by coordinates). Jpgfdraw outputs the underlying PGF
language which is as near as I've come (apart from another tool called ktikz
which is more of a text editor). The PGF output isn't quite as elegant as I
would like (it suffers a bit from the MS Word HTML output problem) but I'm
wondering whether I can tidy it up somehow.

My fallback (which I may have to use for the moment as I'm pushed for time)
is Draw and good old draw2latex...

I've also just found a Draw to [lots of things] converter for other
platforms:
