Lua and RISC OS
presented by Gavin Wraith
Monday 18th January 2010, 7:45pm
The Blue-Eyed Maid (upstairs in the Spice Lounge restaurant)
173 Borough High Street
London
SE1 1HR
Lua is a powerful, fast, lightweight, embeddable programming language.
It is available for many operating systems, including RISC OS.
Gavin started developing RiscLua in 2002 and has been promoting its
use ever since! Among the topics he will be covering are:
- How is Lua different and why is it so successful.
- How is RiscLua different from BBC BASIC: a comparison of the areas
where each language shines, and of their strengths and weaknesses.
- Using RiscLua with StrongED: how to search for patterns across many
files without having to struggle with the horrors of unintelligible
regexp syntax.
- Cooking up little programs for special problems, without needing the
RISC OS PRMs.
For a very impressive example of what is possible using Lua on RISC
OS, see the commercial data analysis package LuaFox.
TouchBook
=========
This meeting will also be a chance to see the TouchBook in action.
This innovative netbook design is based on the Beagleboard so offers
the possibility of the first ARM powered RISC OS portable since the
Acorn A4.
The usual arrangements
======================
Admittance is free and everyone is welcome. A range of hot and cold
food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, will be on sale.
Anyone with wireless enabled handhelds or laptops can access the
internet during the meeting, or (if time allows) use ROUGOL's own Risc
PC to do so after the main presentation has finished. Please speak to
Bryan Hogan if you have problems connecting.
The venue is between London Bridge and Borough tube stations, so
readily accessible by public transport (both stations are a five
minute walk away, through well lit and CCTV'd main streets). It also
has ample cycle parking (covered by CCTV) very close by.
If you are arriving by car, the Congestion Charge ends at 6pm and our
meeting starts much later. However, please note that parking on double
red lines is restricted at all times. On single red or yellow lines,
it is best to park after 7pm. If you aren't completely familiar with
*central* London parking or driving, please allow extra time,
patience, and maps.
