A new version of the Easi/TechWriter family of structured word
processors has been released at last week-end's RISC OS London Show.
Easi/TechWriter 8.9 improves one of the main unique features of the
EasiWriter family: support for foreign file formats, in particular
Microsoft Word compatibility. For many years the EasiWriter family has
been well known for its unique ability to read MS Word .doc files.
Time has moved on and usage of the old .doc format has been declining.
Starting from Word 2007 the .doc format has been replaced by a new
format called Office Open XML, saved with the extension .docx. Up to
now, .docx files could not be imported by any RISC OS word processor.

Easi/TechWriter 8.9 is finally able to import MS Word .docx files.
So far, its implementation of this format is only partial and still
far from being as comprehensive as the existing .doc import
capabilities. Nevertheless, it allows typical .docx documents to be
rendered in a useful way, including paragraph and character styles
and very basic table and image support.

Work on supporting the OpenOffice.org ODT file format has started as
well, though this is still in its very early stages. Easi/TechWriter
8.9 at least imports ODT files as plain text.

In addition to these new import capabilities, version 8.9 also has an
"Open recent" menu that gives quick access to the most recently loaded
files.
