I am pleased to announce updates of Sergio Monesi's command-line utility
'nuke' and Tony Hopstaken's front end for it, !Nuke, both of which now work
in the Iyonix, thanks to Colin Ferris, who re-compiled 'nuke' for 32-bit
compatibility. These new versions are now available from
http://www.queen.clara.net/pgp/acorn.html
I thank both Sergio and Colin for agreeing to the release of 'nuke' on
my website.
Sergio's 'nuke' provides the most powerful and versatile means for erasing
files by overwriting their disc sectors, making it impossible to recover the
data. Multiple overwrites with various levels of security are possible, up
to a 'True Military' option with 35 specially designed successive
overwrites. There are options for erasing entire directories, and also the
free space on a disc.
!Nuke contains a copy of 'nuke', but some users may prefer to download only
one or the other, since they may be useful for different purposes. !Nuke
makes it unnecessary to remember the specific commands of 'nuke' for its
various options. On the other hand, by placing a copy of 'nuke' in the
Library directory, the user can erase any file with the basic level of
security (single overwriting) by simply typing a command of the form "nuke
<filename>", which may be sufficient for most purposes.
Please note that 'nuke' (and, consequently, !Nuke) does *not* work in
Virtual Acorn systems. An alternative for use in such systems is my
application !Erase, which is somewhat slower and more limited in its
options, but nevertheless quite secure for most practical purposes.
