I don't /always/ play with toys, you see...

I have just written a simple JetDirect print server for RISC OS.
This is an application that shares a printer, connected to a
RISC OS computer, to other computers on a LAN, via the JetDirect
protocol. Currently I use it to print from an Eee, running
Linux, via the wireless LAN. JetDirect is also sometimes known
as "raw" and normally uses port 9100.

Although I only have facilities to test on an Iyonix and a printer
connected via USB, there appears to be no reason why it wouldn't
also work on anything from RISC OS 3.1 upwards, with the printer
connected via any interface supported by the RISC OS Printer
Manager. My application doesn't communicate with the printer
directly, only with the Printer Manager (and the TCP/IP stack of
course).

Note that any client computer wanting to use the shared printer
still has to have a printer driver for that model of printer.
A print server in no way removes or alters that requirement.

The current state is that it only accepts one print job at once,
although I'm working on extending it to multiple simultaneous
print jobs from one or multiple clients. The whole thing
multi-tasks smoothly in RISC OS. It only prints to the currently
selected printer.

I will make it available free. If you would like to use it, just
e-mail me at davehigton at dsl dot pipex dot com.

Why do you have to e-mail me? Why don't I just put it up on my
web site?

Well, the last few apps I've written, I've said "Let me know how
you get on with it". Hardly anybody has. I'd just like to know
who wants it, so I can badger you to find out how you get on
with it :-)

You can also ask me questions about it, if you like.

Dave
