4th Eurographics Workshop on Design, Specification and
Verification of Interactive Systems DSV-IS'97
Granada (Spain), 4-6 June 1997

Preliminar CALL FOR CONTRIBUTION

Background: The design of interactive systems poses special problems. For
example, the use of graphics in such systems involve a number of issues which
do not appear in traditional graphics systems: synchronization, time, event
management, etc. In order to manage this complexity, it is very important to
have tools, notations and methodologies to support the designer's work during
the refinement process from specification to implementation.

Aims and Scope: The purpose of the workshop is to present and discuss the
state of the art in this area; compare approaches in order to identify the
principal requirements and the most suitable notations; present tools that
support approaches and indicate the meaningful results which can be obtained
from them. Contributions are invited on (but not limited to) the following
topics:

- Foundations and Reference Models for Interactive Systems.
- Methodologies for abstract design, comparative studies of
methods/description techniques.
- Temporal properties of interactive systems.
- Cooperative properties of distributed interactive systems.
- Formal specification methods.
- Model-based approaches for user interface design.
- Task-based approaches for user interface design.
- Links between Software Engineering and User Interface Design.
- Implementation of specifications.
- Error analysis. - Formal description of user related properties.
- Contextual Task Analysis.
- Design of Graphic Systems, Window Systems, User Interface Management Systems
- Constraint-Based Systems (e.g., Layout Systems, Graphics).
- Computer-aided design of user interface (at all levels: requirements,
specification, design, prototyping, implementation, testing, evaluating,
versioning, re-engineering, complete life cycle).
- Computer-Aided or Automated Generation of User Interfaces.
- Formalisms for User Interfaces.
- User Interface Management Systems.

A significant subset of the papers published in the proceedings will be
presented in order to initiate discussion. Workshop sessions shall be used
to discuss technical, operational and scientifically up-to-date issues and
shall be based on a small set of pre-determined case studies. Special
attention shall be paid to Computer Aided Design of user interfaces.

Participation will be limited to encourage discussion. Selection will take
place on the basis of three kinds of submission:

Full Papers. Full papers address in-depth questions in-line with the above
topics, up to 15 A4 pages. Please submit 4 copies to the address below.

Practising Experience Papers. These papers address technical, operational or
industrial perspectives and problems in designing interactive applications.
Practice and Experience papers should be up to 5 A4 pages. Please submit 3
copies to the address below.

Position Papers. Participation without submitting a Full or a Practice and
Experience paper may be possible in some cases. If you wish to participate
please submit a position paper with your views on the topics of the workshop.
Position papers should be 2 A4 pages. Please submit 3 copies to the address
below.

A cover sheet must accompany all submissions. This cover sheet must include:
the paper category, the title, the name and all contact details (address,
phone, fax, e-mail, ftp, http, if any) of the primary contact person, the
abstract and the topic keywords. All accepted papers belonging to the three
above categories will be published in the workshop proceedings to be
distributed at the workshop.

The programme committee will select the most relevant papers, to be included
in a final proceedings book planned for the Springer Eurographics Series,
along with the workshop reports.
