Basically, the OS X software update system told me there were some
updates available this morning (one of which was a Java update).
After installing and re-starting, SPSS 16.0.2.1 would not start up
again, giving an error:
"Cannot launch Java application, Uncaught exception in main method:
java.lang.AbstractMethodError: com.spss.java_client.ui.B.Á(Z)V"
Hmmmm.... No idea at all what that might mean, except that it looks
like it has something to do with Java..
Anyone else had this problem?
Thanks!
This is not a problem we have heard about, and AFAWK, the Java updates
should not affect the JVM used by SPSS. The Mac update pushed Java SE
6, and SPSS is set up to take only the highest Java 5 JVM.
The Java update is not supposed to change anything with existing Java
versions anyway.
I suggest that you contact Technical Support. They will want a lot
more details on what happened.

Exactly the same happened to me after installing the latest 10.5 Java
update: SPSS does not fire up anymore, the same message appears. Other
colleagues who have refrained from installing the Java update are fine
so far. Looks like there is a Java/SPSS conflict here... Anyone who
knows of a workaround so far? Downgrading Java?
Best, Martin
actually this happened after applying SPSS 16.0.2.1 patch.... it
worked fine on an up-to-date Leopard installation before I applied the
SPSS patch
