Subject: SAS, EG installations, registry cleaning tools, "There was an error creating the new data set"
I am more posting this to make a comment, rather than looking for a
solution.  And with luck, maybe someone who works at SAS will read
this.

On WinXP I have SAS Base and SAS EG 4 installed.  Whenever I use
CCleaner or RegScrubXP to clean the registry (and temporary files), my
EG 4 installation stops working.

The error occurs when I try to create a new data set in EG 4.  The
error is "There was an error creating the new data set".  Not very
helpful error, but what can you do.

I've had this error many times before and only just made the discovery
that it had to do with software tools for cleaning one's computer.  The
only way I have found out to get rid of it is to completely remove
anything SAS related from my computer and to re-install it.  Simply
removing EG and reinstalling that does not work.  At least SAS base
continues to work.

When using computer cleaning software, one should expect the results to
not be perfect.  However, it is interesting to know that these cleaning
software tools have never happened to any of my other software or
databases.  It begs me to ask some questions
- What is it about how SAS is installed on a computer that pieces of it
get flagged for removal during regular computer maintenance?
- Can the installation of SAS be improved such that these errors do not
happen?

During the cleaning, I even took great lengths to ensure that I didn't
remove any registry keys or files that seemed to be related to SAS or
EG.
