How to use $include for file inclusion?
Could you please give me a tiny example for how to write a little example.mws File which includes some text file some.txt? As I understand the help pages, all I need to do is just to write $include "some.txt" but it doesn't work for me. Thank you, Rainer

Analysis of nntp traffic for Matlab, Maple, Mathematica, Sage and Scilab newsgroups
I used data from Google newsgroups to do some plots comparing newsgroup traffic trends over the years for the above groups. [link] Hope you find it interesting. --Nasser

Equate command in Maple
Hi everybady, I have a equation in the following simple form D(x0+px1+p^2x2+p^3x3+...)=p(x0 +px1+p^2x2+p^3x3+...) where D is an operator. I want to get new equations by equating the terms with the identical powers of p, as follows p^0 : D(x0)=0 p^1 : D(x1)=x0 p^2 : D(x2)=x1 and so on. I saw "equate" command in maple tutorial. Is it possible to do that... more »

A bit of statistics trivia for Maple and Mathematica
I did a count of the number of functions in Mathematica 7 the other day, and I figured I should do one like this for Maple as well. So, here are some stats, maybe some might find them interesting. Mathematica 7: ============ The System (i.e kernel) contains 1,920 functions. It comes with additional 35 standard packages that can be loaded using... more »

Are some Maple packages always loaded? example Galois Field (GF)?
hi; Maple 12. when I do ?index[packages], one the packages listed is Galois Field (GF) but if I do with(GaloisField) or with(GF) I get an error that there is not such package. Are there such "special" packages that do not need to be loaded? If GF is not a package, then why is it listed in the ?index[packages]... more »

how to "unload" a package after it was "with" when it is implemented not using modules?
hi; Maple 12: When I type with(simplex) for example, I can't do unwith(simplex) because simplex package is not implemented using modules. ...Error,(in unwith)the procedure `unwith'is currently disabled due to the presence of table-based packages I am not sure then how to "clean" things out. Suppose I want to remove all... more »

help! Using discrete convolution to approximate continuous convolution...?
Hi all, I am helping a friend on this. We would like to evaluate the convolution of f(x)=exp(3 * x) / (1 + exp(x) ^ 5). However, in Maple and Mathematica, using symbolic calculations, the convolution results in numerical oscillation (lots of spikeness). We don't know why. We just couldn't get rid of the spikeness. And we... more »

Maple 12 GUI will not come up. But classical Maple ok, how to find problem?
Hello; For some reason, Maple12 will not come up any more on my PC. Windows XP, SP2. From Start menu, I click on Maple12 and nothing comes up. But When I click on classical Maple it comes up OK. This sound like a java problem? I get nothing on the screen, no error message. I tried to run maplew.exe from DOS, and I also see no error.... more »

Maple Fourier series packages?
It seems that Maple (versions <= 9.5 at least) do not have Fourier series packages; they do have Fourier transforms and discrete Fourier capabilities for finite data sets. Has anybody developed a readily- accessible Fourier series module for any version of Maple? R.G. Vickson

Help! Numerically handle removable singularities: a more clear example...
Hi all, I am helping my friend on this issue. We have some numerical computation which involves a lot of "log(g)*g" and we have to evaluate these for g on the interval [0, 1], numerically... The reason that 0 is included is that because the singularity at 0 is removable. In Maple: ...%; 0... more »
