Maple wasting huge amounts of energy while idle?

I have been running maple on my laptop, and have noticed that if Ihave
it open but idle, it still uses huge amounts of energy. My battery life
drops to about 1/2 if maple is running, but idle (ie no calculations
going on), and the laptop gets hot. What in the world do they have maple
doing while idle? Do they have some massive loop running while waiting
for input?
