python script to add a field and edit it for several shapefiles

Hi users,
could anyone help me to resolve my problem???
I have a number of shapefiles, stored in the same directory, and I
would like to add a field to them, and then edit this field with a
value extracted from the name of the shape file...
I am almost there : I manage to add the field and edit it for one
file, but once I add a loop to go through all the file and do this for
each one of them the thing crashes...
could any one help me with that, by checking my code and correct the
thing which goes wrong??
