I have a raster with 8 values symbolizing different land uses. I would
like to draw a polygon and get the areas of each of the "values"
within the polygon for analysis in a hydrology study. How can I do
this? By the way I am an autoCAD user so not very familiar with ESRI
products and am fumbling through it :(

activate spatial analyst extension
Tools>Extensions> tick spatial analyst
Show the toolbar for spatial analyst if it is not already there
View>toolbars>spatial analyst
Now, int the toolbar for spatial analyst choose
Spatial analyst>convert>raster to features
give a name to your output file and you're done
