Actually, it was selected by IBM that is the contractor for NASA.
I don't know why, but undestand that Lynx rewrote UNIX from ground zero
in order to make it real-time OS (instead of modifying it).

According to Unix Today, NASA is emphasizing commercial standards, particularly
Unix, because it does not want to be locked into proprietary systems that
are hard to change as work on the project evolves.

As to why they specifically chose LynxOS, I don't know.
