Does anyone have any idea why Quirk 4.11 should refuse to see Adobe T1
Symbol? (Sy_.pfb and Sy_.pfm for the technically interested) under
Windows XP?
AI and PS both show it in font menus.
Not only does Quirk not show it in it's font menu or in the measurements
pallet but it whinges about jobs that use it.
Unless someone knows a workaround I'm going to have to substitute
Bitstream Symbol unless on 18 documents... :-(
While we're about it, here are two more type oddities in QX 4.11 under
XP:
No T1 icons for any T1 fonts listed in the font menu or measurements
pallet.
No "Filename", "Type" or "Version" info in font info, just the
"Postscript name".
On the plus side, those old favourites us Windoze 9x users just loved to
see in Quirk - "Tms Rm", "Roman" and "Helv" (as duplicates of the
genuine instances "Times Roman" and "Helvetica" have vanished under XP
like an old oak table... ;-)
Ah, well just a few more reasons _not_ to upgrade to the no doubt even
flakier QX 5.
Now if someone tells me InDesign won't show T1 Adobe Symbol _and_ omits
the file info from installed PS fonts I'll swear I'll start using
Pubslasher and what's more, I'll send all our files to Lee for ripping.

Best,
(For the terminally technophiliated: We're running XP Pro and Font
reserve.)

Well...I'll be...buggerrrrred.
You're right. T1 Symbol has appeared in Quirk as if by magic.
I owe you a beer or three, Mac.
Now, for your next trick, can you explain why the addition of ATM Lite
should refresh parts Font Reserve and Windoze cannot?
Best, and many, many thanks for the advice :-)

You want Adobe to tell Microsoft everything<BG>?
>You want Adobe to tell Microsoft everything<BG>?
Well, actually Mac, I've misled you. Your "fix" did not work :-)
It _SEEMED_ to work but in reality ATM Lite played no part in it.
Confused?
I was.
Let me explain for the benefit of anyone else who may have this problem
now or in the future.
Firstly, I routinely clean-up the Windoze font folder after installing a
new OS to delete all the crud like "Impact" and ""Widgetfont", etc. On
my own machine I had been more zealous than usual and deleted SYMBOLE -
the Windows System font. Now, for those unfamiliar with Windoze I should
explain that although Windoze (like the Mac) uses and needs certain
system fonts in order to display menus and other UI bits correctly, the
critical files are actually very few in number. "Marlett" is one - and
those who delete it on _ANY_ Windoze PC will rue the day :-)
But "SYMBOLE" is _not_ a critical system font file and deleting it does
not impair WIndoze in any way. So that's what I'd done - on _MY_ PC but
_NOT_ on any of the others.
And the issue with T1 Symbol not showing up in Quirk was on _ANOTHER_ PC
- not on mine.
So when I installled ATM lite on _MY_ machine and tested T1 Symbol in
Quirk I thought it was ATM which had solved the problem. Not true, it
was the removal of the "Symbole" system font which allowed Quirk to see
T1 Symbol.
Then, when I put ATM on to our other PC's (which still had Symbole
installed in their Windoze fonts folders) I was naturally puzzled as to
why the ATM trick didn't work on thess PC's when it had (apparently)
worked on mine.
The final check that revealed the difference between these machines was
a File search for "symbol" on the root drive. On the other PC's "sybole"
showed up in the results - on mine it did not.
That's when the light went on! <G?
So, if SYMBOLE is installed there is an apparent name conflict that
affects Quirk only. Remove it and the conflict disappears. Neither ATM
nor Font Reserve appear to play any part in this.
This _WAS_ not an issue with 95 or 98SE. I'd be interested to hear from
people using Quirk 4.11 on NT or 2000 to see if it also affects these
OS's or just XP?
What fun this biz is!
Best wishes,

I can report that Quark under 2K PRO shows this symptom, but, alas for
them, InDesign 2.0 does not.
> What fun this biz is!
Yep.
Except that "symbole" is not strictly standard ttf. For one thing it's
bitmapped. For another, if it was a straightforward conflict how come
the humble "Wordpad" doesn't have a problem with it? FWIW neither do
AI8 or PS 6.0.1.
Let's call a spade a total tosser, shall we, and agree that, once again,
Quark has lived up to it's name (Quirk).
Best,
