An experiment for InDesign CS3

If you have ID CS 3, I'd be curious if you get the same results which
I do w/ the following steps:

- in PhotoShop (or other bitmap editor) create a 300dpi CMYK graphic
1,325 pixels wide
- place it in InDesign on a letter-size page in a 26p5 frame @100% -
p9 from the left page edge (so that it bleeds 9pts. off the page)
- create a coloured text box which is 4p2 from the left edge and 21p6
wide

The two objects should be neatly aligned at their right edge --- place
them w/ say 3 pts. or less of space between them so that this is
obvious

- export to a .pdf using the PDF/X-1a:2001 setting --- this .pdf will
be okay
- export to a new .pdf, setting the Bleed to p9 all around ---
this .pdf will be okay
- export to a new .pdf, using the PDF/X-1a:2001 setting but turning
on crop marks --- this .pdf will be okay
- export to a new .pdf, setting the Bleed to be p9 all around _and_
turning on crop marks --- this .pdf will exhibit a mis-alignment
problem (the bitmap graphic will be ~.905 pts. wider than the coloured
text box)

So, if others get this mis-alignment, it would seem that it would
behoove one to _not_ use bleed _and_ crop marks when exporting a .pdf
from ID CS3 which has objects which must align precisely (you can
print to a .ps file and distill that to get such a .pdf, or post-
process using Acrobat to add marks to a .pdf w/ bleed)

Thanks.

I was finally able to convince Adobe technical support of this and
they've passed it on to their product development team, ``Hopefully we
will be able to develop a correction to this error in a future update
for InDesign.''

Glad to.

At least it was quicker and easier than the several hours call
convincing them that embedded graphics in .rtfs exported from ID CS
were one graphic format, but tagged as another.
