As announced recently at Interop, the International Telecommunication
Union standards documents (including the CCITT Blue Book) are now available
online. You can get them by anonymous FTP from bruno.cs.colorado.edu (soon
to be renamed digital.resource.org) in pub/standards. There is a HELP file
in this directory that explains what you need to know. You can also access
these documents by sending mail to inf...@bruno.cs.colorado.edu, with the
message body (not subject line) containing commands to a mail server. Use
the command
help
to get started. Alternatively,
send HELP
will send a more detailed description.

These documents will soon be available at a number of other sites as
well.

Please be aware that the standards on this server are being offered on
an experimental, volunteer basis. They are currently in a preliminary
state of typesetting conversion. Please bear with us concerning
imperfections. The standards are being offered free of charge and we
expressly waive all guarantees and warranties. If you want a guaranteed
version of the standards, you MUST refer to the printed versions
available for purchase from the International Telecommunication Union.

Sincerely,
Carl Malamud

Hopefully the printed versions will be forced to reduce their
rip-off pricing levels a bit by this long overdue competition.

Too bad there isn't an Internet Achievement award for which you
guys would be a certain lock.

Ah, but the CCITT does not publish standards, they publish
*Recommendations* :-)

Ah, so the printed versions of standards are guaranteed. So the next

time a broken CCITT standard causes your organisation to lose mucho
dollars, you sue the ITU.

Come to think of it I never did see a disclaimer on any CCITT standard.
You know the sort, "...no warranty, either express or implied is offered
to the fitness or suitability of this standard for any purpose."

Please excuse my mischief. I assume you meant to say you can
not guarantee the online versions are the same as the printed versions.
Nevertheless, thank you for your good work in making the standards
available on line.

Regards,

Andrew

P.S. I don't think you could sue the ITU anyway since its an organ of
the United Nations. I presume citizens of member nations of the U.N.
are precluded from sueing it.
