Strange URL

I have a user who is trying to access to a URL on the Internet.
The URL is http://www.pro...@gwu.edu
My DNS server is unable to resolve the request. Any comments or
suggestions are highly appreciated.

I don't have any problem with resolving gwu.edu. What results do you
get when trying to resolve that name? What does your name server
configuration look like? What version of BIND are you using? Etc. etc.

Try to resolve just the domain part, for example:

If you need to authenticate to a webserver you can do it in the following
form:
http://user:pass...@host.domain.tld/
If you don't need to authenticate any user or password is ignored, so
http://www.pro...@gwu.edu is really http://gwu.edu/ and the username
'www.prometheus' is ignored.
Or if you really want to make a fancy hosting construction, you could
serve up a different website for the user 'www.prometheus', but this is
never ment for that.
