I need help on convertig GE Volution E8 .vol / .raw files

Dear Gents,

I have a set of GE Volution E8 .vol (KRETZFILE 1.0) / .raw files that I'd need to convert to some commercial 3D formats somehow for further cleaning and image extraction / rendering.

So far I couldn't even find a software to at least open these files and I couldn't find a working solution on the net after days of research. I do not need them for diagnostics purposes.

If anyone has ideas on how to do it, that would be highly appreciated!

O.K first some context for the Ge 3D ultrasound formats:

In 2001 Ge bought a major share of Kretztechnik AG from Medison, and
Kretztechnik AG became a wholly owned subsidiary of GE Medical
Systems. (Medison acquired Kretztechnik AG in 1996.)

Since then, Ge has used the Kretzfile format for the 3D part of their
ultrasound images. Recently (for the "Vivid" images) they modified
that format to make it more DICOM friendly. Actually what they did is
encapsulate the KLretzfile data in private tags.

Ge has a product: 4D View that work with the .vol data. I believe it
can be used to convert the cylindrical and spherical data to Cartesian
data.

Now the main problem with converting these 3D datasets to DICOM is
that the data is often expressed in cylindrical or spherical
coordinates (depending on the probe) and DICOM 3D format only accept
Cartesian voxels. So in order to do a proper conversion you need to
re-sample the 3D dataspace.

I do have a couple of products that work with the Kretzfile format
(and its GE derived variations). Unfortunately these product do not
convert from cylindrical or spherical to Cartesian space, so the
resulting data is not really DICOM. For this reason, if the original
data is not already Cartesian, the converted data will be SC instead
of US.

You can use the free viewer TomoVision to see the data and the (not
free) converter DICOMatic to convert to DICOM.
