I'm sorry to say, and this is a general statement, but running
firmware upgrade without an appropriate reason is plain dumb. The
rule is simple:
Read the description of the firmware update. If there is not a
specific bug for your particular device or environment that is being
fixed, and is so critical that you cannot live with it, then don't do
any firmware upgrades. No matter how innocent, any firmware upgrade is
liable to destroy your system by introducing new bugs or making
existing ones visible.
The mindset of let's see what happens will only be satisfied once a
few bad things happen, you the person moves his or her curiosity into
a more productive direction!
There are many examples of innocent upgrades causing havoc, so if one
wishes to experiment, discipine and preparation is required, in order
to recover possible from disaster (in this case, having a spare
scanner and being willing to dispose of a wrecked one).
