epson V600 screwing up

This scanner worked fine for about 8 months. Now, about every 6th scan,
the scanner makes extra noise and produces a blank white scan. Scanning
again immediately produces a good scan.
I am guessing that the extra noise might be some mechanical guide inside
needing a little oil. Anyone else have this kind of problem?

using the tranny lid?? is that making a thumping noise?

Hi Rob,
I am using it to scan class annuals from high school. I don't know what
a tranny lid is. I just lift the lid that cam with it and put the book
against the glass. As I said, often the scan will make an extra loud
noise. This means that the entire scan has some sort of extra sound
level to it. There is no thump. It is maybe as if I were trying to scan
at a higher resolution than the 300 dpi I use. If I use it to scan
negatives at very high resolution there is an extra sound level to it.
But it works.
Like I also said, I can make no changes whatever and scan again and it
comes out fine.

a moving lamp in the lid to pass light through the film.
is this scanner very old ? you may want to lubricate the guide shaft
within the scanner. The thump could be the drive toothed belt jumping a
tooth because the head is sticking on the shaft. page 4 502-head RHS
Belt 532.just needs a drop of oil.(not WD40 as this will dryout)
When you pull it apart which is easy This is for the V700 and its the
dotted part on page. Try not to get any dust onto or into the scanner
you may endup with lines in the scan.

I removed the top glass cover. I was careful but still tore apart a
wire. I had to ever so carefully reconnect by soldering that wire to the
connector. Tricky business. Anyway, I lubed the long steel guide with
synthetic oil. I have been scanning and it has not repeated that nasty
little trick. I felt that steel guide very carefully before I lubed it.
It was completely dry. I suspect it was never lubed at the factory. I
was careful to try to keep out dust. It has been looking good so far.
