I don't get it. What's the problem ?

Is it that a drive is created and you can't use it ? You don't have a
memory card you can install in it ?

It's a printer, printers are generally connected forever. But since the
icon is related to USB rather than USB memory devices, the icon no longer
works to indicate that some USB memory device has been attached, since the
icon is always there since the printer is always there.

In the old days, you'd put a floppy in the drive, and see the floppy light
on the drive go on, so you knew everything was okay. You could watch the
LED connected to the hard drive, and know things were going okay. You
could watch the LEDs on your modem and know everything was okay.

But since the icon doesn't seem to relate to USB memory devices, the icon
becomes useless since the printer is always plugged in, and thus the icon
is always on.

If it's a printer, then the USB storage device could be the equivalent
of a USB card reader. They're put on printers, so you can print images
from a digital camera memory device.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16828142043

"Other Ports PictBridge" (direct camera to printer connection)

"Digital Media Memory Card Compatibility
SD Memory Card
SDHC
MultiMediaCard (v4.1)
MultiMediaCard Plus (v4.1)
miniSD Card
miniSDHC Card
RS-MMC (v4.1)
microSD Card
microSDHC Card
CompactFlash Card
Microdrive
Memory Stick, PRO, Duo, PRO Duo, Micro
xD-Picture Card
xD-Picture Card (Type M)
xD-Picture Card (Type H)"

This is supposed to cover things like USB card readers.

Now, maybe if you hide a non-existent card reader drive, it
no longer shows in "Safely Remove" ?

Just a guess,

My flat bed printer/scanner/copier shows a USB tray notification as
well, but then again it also has a card reader. The op's printer may
have that feature but it may not have been why that particular printer
was purchased and thus gone unnoticed by the op. Frankly I can't recall
if any of the previous printers, one of which was 'print only' caused
the USB tray notification or not, its been too long.

But in either event, Windows normally plays a sound when a USB stick is
inserted into a USB port on the computer as well as display a pop up
windows Explorer window showing the stick as an available drive, just
minimize that window as a constant reminder that the stick is there. So
there is ample evidence that an additional USB device has been
introduced and an available way to keep it noticed. If the stick is
always present you could also put a short cut on the desk top to the
drive as an easy way to check or use it.

Of course if you turn the aural and visual cues off then you will just
have to manually check your file manager to see if an additional drive
has appeared or been present all along.

Its the way Windows is supposed to work.

Click the system tray icon once, it tells you what USB drives are seen
and mounted. Simples.

OK. What you can do is use the Disk Management to change that associated
drive letter to a drive letter at the end of the list such as drive "Z:".

Right-Click on "My Computer" --> Manage --> Disk Management

Then install the WinXP TweakUI PowerToy.

I couldn't find it on the Microsoft Downloads probably 'cause WinXP is
reaching EoL and support is being halted.
However the Microsoft MVP site is hosting it.
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/tweakui.htm

Direct download..
http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/c/a/fca6767b-9ed9-45a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

With this utility you can HIDE that drive "Z:" (or whatever you reassigned
it to).

This appears normal (if your Canon printer includes a card
reader as is now common.)
One solution may be:
1. Reassign drive letter X to this pseudodrive permanently.
2. Configure the Operating System never to display drive X.

The specs say it has wireless and Ethernet as well as USB,.....can you try
using either of those connection options ?
