Hi.
Being a devoted HP-DJ user (300, 540, 600) in my SOHO graphic design
studio, I thout to move on to the 690 +photo realism kit. However, I
have learnt that Epson has a similar photo reality offering with
better reso, and also Canon. Unfortunately - I can't get the same
photo printed at three different dealers (they have their own samples
- ha!), so I can not compare.

Has anyone checked which of the three offerings is best in the
photo realism area only (this is what I am replacing the printer
for).?

Many tnx for quick replies (there are good deals ending this
weekend...) - - Ilan

Hi
I currently own a Canon 600. And I mainly print pics on it.
I've tried all the "special" papers and still don't get the results I
desire. The BJC600 is a great printer for text and graphics if you don't
need high quality. That goes for most of the inkjets out there.
I've done some investigating on the Alps 2010 printer and have a test
print they sent me and it's very impressive. I've only heard one bad
thing about the printer which was that the ribbons got tangled up.
No it's not a dot matrix printer. They use a wax transfer type of setup.
Go to the AltaVista search engine and type Alps,or MD 2010. Also you can
choose to search in the newsgroups under the same search words.
I'm going to be ordering mine in about two months.
Currently the printer cost's $499 and the cartridges range from $6 to $8
dollars a piece. You can also get metallic cartridges for this printer.

Just my two cents

The Alps is good, but banding was quite apparent on the samples I have
seen.

Check out the new Epson 600 or 800.

Unless all you want to do is print photo-quality images...avoid
dye-sublimation printers. Sure they do the job great, but what else
can they do and who's got the cash to pay for $6-$8 prints.

Many manufacturers have come out with "photo inks". HP's DeskJet 690C
series are the only printers that come with the ink and "technology"
behind it. That technology being HP Photo Resolution Enhancement
technolgy (Photo REt). It combines the new inks with software that
controls the amount of ink.

Check out Computer Reseller News review of the DeskJet 693C. Joel
Shore, the review editor said that the printer was "the most
impressive inkjet printer ever tested" in the labs. Pretty bold
statement considering he test them all.

The DeskJet is now selling for $299! Unlike dye-sub printers, you can
also print just about anything else - letters, presentations, banners,
etc.
