Can someone please help me with this? I'm trying to connect an Epson
Stylus 800 to my Power Mac, running OS 8.6.1. I have the latest software
driver installed (from the Epson web site). However, I can't seem to get
it to work from the printer port. It keeps going to the modem port. Even
so, I can't get it to print. There's no help on Epson's site on this
problem and I can't figure it out. Please help. Thanks.

Probably because it uses a serial interface on the Mac?

Yea, to use a parallel printer on the Mac you have to get a
cable/software combo called Power Print. I use Power Print so that I can
print to my Canon printer from my Power Mac.

Right... and...?

The Mac printer and modem ports are _identical_. They're both LocalTalk
ports and the Epson should be able to use either one for its serial
connection.

Possibly the printer port is configured for use by something else. I ran
into something similar recently, but I don't remember how I cleared the
problem. I think it involved a large bottle of acetone and a shotgun.
