Hi All-

Have recently (reluctantly) switched from an original HP Photosmart printer
due to HP's lack of driver support with Windows XP to an Epson 820 and have
been, to say the least, most pleasantly surprised with the quality of prints
from the new Epson. The output subjectively seems to be considerably better
than the Photosmart's. I also am thrilled with the ability to fully fill the
page with the print as the HP left a minimum of close to a 1 inch margin by
default. Quicker drying inks and much faster printing make me wish I'd made
the switch earlier. Guess I have to thank HP for their lack of support after
all ..... ;-)

That said, can see where I'm going to be going thru cartridges at a quicker
clip than with the Photosmart as they obviously hold less ink per cartridge,
was wondering if anyone has found a compatible cartridge resource where the
ink output closely resembles the Epson's original equipment cartridges.
Also, have you had any head clogging with the compatibles?

Much thanks in advance for any and all input -

The JetTec is one of the acknowledged compatible leaders, and on the site
you will find tips for potential head clogs...

Hi,

We support the 820 with both compatible ink tanks and refill kits. You
must use a workaround procedure to reset the "smart chip". Here's some
information on the mechanical method we recommend:

I also have an enormous amount of info on Epsons at my site:

You will be particularly thrilled when the nozzles clog and are
unrepairable. Then you will go back to HP. I threw out 3 Epsons that
lasted less than a year.

Hi Buckaroo -

This begs the question - why'd you buy the other two Epsons (especially the
third!) once the first one and then second one became unuseable so quickly?
I've had a non-photo specialized Epson printer for text for several years
and have not yet had the clogging problem but also realize others haven't
had the same experience.

Frankly, I'm more interested in the photo output and as long as Epson
produces a superior final product, guess I'll take my chances. As to going
back to HP, that's certainly possible but not as long as Epson's output
(imho) outdoes HP's. Also, the lack of driver support on HP's part was most
discouraging.

Just one man's opinion -

Don't they have a 1 year warranty? Why not get them replaced rather then
tossing them out?

Some good questions....try getting them replaced :) They actually lasted
about 14 months. I kept going back to them because they *do* produce great
output (however noisily). I think the Canon 800 is my next try.

Hi All-

I've recently switched from an HP Photosmart Printer to an Epson Photo 820
as explained in a previous thread (thx for the respopnses) and am very happy
with the Epson's output to say the least.

That said, however, when using the Epson Premium Glossy Photo paper, the
results are incredible but when trying to use my remaining premium HP
Photosmart paper on the Epson printer, the results are terrible. It's almost
as if too much ink is laid down and the paper can't absorb it leaving small
grainy blobs of wet ink. I even tried dropping the dpi but had the same
results.

My question - Since I have almost 200 sheets of the Photosmart Premium
Glossy paper left over, has anyone had any luck using it with the Epson
Photo printers and if so, what settings do you use?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions -

Forget it. HP papers run very bad in Epsons.

However, if you want an artistic 'painting in oil' effect, that's a
piece of cake!

Print HP paper in Epson, then drag a piece of stiff paper with edge on
the paper down across the entire length of the page, dragging the inks
with it. What you'll get is a oil paint like effect.
