Dear TCPP member,
Welcome to the June newsletter! As you know, this is the end of my two-year
term. I have been truly honored to serve as your TCPP chair with your
enthusiastic support and to work with many distinguished members on a range
of initiatives. I am pleased that there are five candidates for TCPP chair
position for 2009-2011 =E2=80=93 this is a strong sign of a revitalized TCPP
community. The executive and advisory committees of TCPP would not let me
off the hook so I am in fray too. The voting ends this Thursday, so I urge
you to participate in this process by emailing your vote right away. The
e-ballot is archived here:

Many of us returned from Rome after a very successful IPDPS-09. IPDPS goes
to Atlanta next year. We had some key TCPP activities held there as well.
I am happy to report that after two successful PhD forums with solid student
travel funding from U.S. National Science Foundation and TCPP, the PhD
forum now has been institutionalized as a regular IPDPS event. This years
best poster award went to Francesco Pasquale ("On the Speed of Information
Spreading in Dynamic Networks" - Advisor: Andrea Clementi).
Congratulations!
In the TCPP reception and general membership meeting, with over 200
attendees, 15 volunteers were honored with certificates for a range of TCPP
activities over the last two years (see http://tcpp.computer.org), and
Michael Garland gave an excellent talk on manycore GPU computing.
The second round of TCPP Outstanding Service award was special and kept as
a surprise until the banquet night of IPDPS. Prof. Arnold Rosenberg
revealed the awardees. They are none other than the IPDPS trio due to
retire soon: Sussama Barua, Sally Jelinek, and Bill Pitts! Congratulations
to them again!
We also had a very fruitful TCPP executive and advisory committee meeting
at IPDPS. The committees were very appreciative of NSF funding, resulting
in a record $36K in student travel awards. The total budget of TCPP grew by
more than 300% over the past two years, resulting in a number of activities
and new initiatives. I thank all the volunteers for a superb job!
Here are the updates on the TCPP related conferences followed by CFPs, etc.
Submit yours to tcpp-a...@cc.gatech.edu.
Regards,
Sushil K. Prasad

Title : "Metaheuristics: from design to implementation"
Wiley 2009 (624pp), Author: Prof. El-Ghazali Talbi (University of Lille,
CNRS, INRIA)
http://eu.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0470278587.html
Abstract: This book provides a complete background on metaheuristics and
shows readers how to design and implement powerful search algorithms to
solve complex optimization problems across a diverse range of optimization
problems in science and industry. It presents the main design questions for
all families of metaheuristics (e.g. representations, neighborhoods,
parameter tuning, constraint handling, performance evaluation).
