PVM in Slackware

I am using PVM in Slackware. Whenever I attempt to add a node PVM
complains that PVM_ROOT is not set on the node I am trying to add but,
of course, it is set. I had this problem using PVM in Ubuntu and
solved it by adding export "PVM_ROOT=....." to .bashrc, and that
worked. Now I have switched to Slackware and this doesn't work, I
also tried adding the line to /etc/profile as well to no avail. I
would find it very useful to be able to add hosts. Does anyone have
insights into my problem? Any help is very appreciated.
