Hello This is badger007 back to being a badger

I am installing alpha vms 8.3 on the charon as400 freeware that is good until dec 31 i might get it going by then.

I am working on alphavm but having port problems with it and i am tired of problems.

I really dont understand option 2 on the main menu of the uxc on the alpha .. it makes you post a domain. I dont have a local domain

It makes you use dhcp and i need a static ip for my router

the alias option dont really understand how to use that one.

if someone can explain that to me. I can get "ALPHA1" running ip and then we can get down to business of trying to get dec windows working.

load dec basic, c, pascal, fortran

OpenVMS might disappoint you there, then. Some OpenVMS configurations
and tools can get pretty gnarly, and emulators tend to be some of the
tougher configurations.

> I really dont understand option 2 on the main menu of the uxc on the alpha ..

Well, this is really a generic IP question, and is a question typical
of a server system. Most (all?) servers ask for this information
during a set-up, too.

> it makes you post a domain.

Yep. Servers have host names and domain names.

> I dont have a local domain

Well, yes, you do. Sure, you do! Congratulations, you're now the
proud "owner" of the .badger top-level domain (TLD)! Free!!!!!

Yes, you now have the domain lab.badger, and the host name vms.lab.badger!

This is great!!!! You have a domain!!!! Free!!!!!
Congratulations!!!!!!!!! Isn't this KEWL?!?! Sure it is.

But seriously, so long as you don't use a top-level domain (.COM, .NET,
.ORG, .US, .UK, or the couple-hundred existing other top-level domains
(country codes, .museum, .arpa, and some others), then you can do
pretty much what you want here. On your own private NAT'd network,
that is.

And in this case, .badger is not a current top-level domain, so you can
have lab.badger and house.badger and hosts such as evil.empire.badger
and vms.lab.badger, or whatever underneath the .badger TLD. Easy, yes?
There you go, you even now grok a little bit more about how DNS works,
too.

In reality, you will want to register a domain for yourself. That's
cheap, and it avoids the hassles of not having a domain.

The .badger domain won't work off your network, of course, and - if you
want to actually make use of your new local-bogus-private top-level
.badger domain - then you can set up DNS on your local network, either
on OpenVMS or another DNS-capable server. Get your own registered
domain. But for hackery, your .badger TLD will work.

OpenVMS does not work well with DHCP. Use static HP.

That's the HP that's not going anywhere?

I have logs of the sessions I used to set up TCP/IP services with a fixed
IP address back in 2000. This was with earlier versions of both VMS and
TCP/IP Services and the dialogues have changed, but there was sufficient
information there to get me going with more up to date versions.

Configuring TCP/IP Services from scratch via TCPIP$CONFIG.COM and using
the menus:

http://openvms.sture.ch/tcpip_config.txt

Configuring TCP/IP Services from scratch, but using CLI commands to set
up the gateway and DNS entries:

http://openvms.sture.ch/tcpip_config_partial.txt

Paul, can I copy your configuration logs to the vms-ports sourceforge
forum?

https://sourceforge.net/p/vms-ports/wiki/Home/

Or you can join the forum and help get it started?

We need all the help that we can get.

i misspoke there. option 2 is the interface configuration area. option 1 does make you put in a domain name and will not start the ip service with out it, also it will not start unless dhcp is also activated and i need a static ip as i stated.

Hello

I am now trying to use all the setup that paul sent me. I now have a subdomain i can use through no-ip. it is http://kingsplantation.no-ip.org the way i have this setup with a :23 on the end i think that is telnets port of the top of my head. Not much left up there now that i have been playing around with this emulator stuff.

Oh yes i grok it fine. (good author)

Now might be a good time to get to know a little about Wireshark, so
you can actually see what traffic is coming in to and going out from
your Linux box.

Also, don't forget that "I cannot ping (whatever)" is less helpful
when troubleshooting like this than saying what you actually did (cut
+paste is good), and what actually happened (cut+paste is good).
Sometimes ping has helpful error messages, sometimes it doesn't.

Hello

its badger007 he looks strange today he has his thinking hat on. It says and i quote "I Am The Brains Of This Operation"

I think i know what the problem is i am having with the alpha vms not seeing the network. It is the emulator from charon it is how it uses the emulator in the linux version. I dont know if this is ok i am the networking part of the manual here with this post. I have changed the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-p6p1 script with vi to conform with the directions as i see it . I will post them here as well

the script files first i changed it but the system wrote it back to this state that before i changed it to conform with the directions. how do i change it permitly remember i am using fedora 17 it names the ether devices differently

the ifcfg-p6p1 network script
UUID="0061fee2-f8b2-4ca9-bb36-d498440f9c7a"
NM_CONTROLLED="yes"
BOOTPROTO=autoip
DEVICE="p6p1"
ONBOOT="yes"
TYPE=Ethernet
DEFROUTE=yes
IPV4_FAILURE_FATAL=no
IPV6INIT=no
NAME="System p6p1"
HWADDR=50:E5:49:D7:9B:80

there is a long version of the networking section of charon's as400_freeware alpha emulator networking section

Using network with CHARON-AXP/AS400 Freeware

Make sure there is one spare network interface, which is not used by the host operating system and other host software. The best way to do it on Fedora Core 15 – edit network card configuration script in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ethN, where N is interface number, removing all IP-setup related parameters, so finally the file should look like:

# Intel Corporation 82540EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller

DEVICE=eth1

HWADDR=00:07:E9:17:DF:71

ONBOOT=no

Make sure also not to use this adapter in other networking daemons (see corresponding config files).

Attach to the network interface and start CHARON-AXP/AS400 Freeware:

$ CHARON_EWA0=eth1; export CHARON_EWA0

$ as400_freeware
Changing RAM size of virtual AlphaServer 400

Use CHARON_RAM_SIZE environment variable to specify desired RAM size in megabytes:

$ CHARON_RAM_SIZE=1024; export CHARON_RAM_SIZE

$ as400_freeware

If not specified with CHARON_RAM_SIZE environment variable, CHARON-AXP/AS400 Freeware creates virtual AlphaServer 400 with 256MB of RAM. Possible values for CHARON_RAM_SIZE environment variable are 256, 512, or 1024.

Guys i am so sorry i am having so many problems here. Hello

I have managed to get the alphavm_free emulator going it runs a little different than charons stuff. I think i understand the way it uses the network cards in this one. We will see. I am installing vms as i type this. I will let you all know if tcpip works with this one correctly .. Or i understand it better. I hope i do ..

Thanks for you help

it is not the vms setup it is my computer. it is the way fedora and the charon vms alpha emulator handle the network cards. I have switched over to alphavm_free i will try that for a change. I have it working. I will set up my computer differently. right now i have to different ways to setup dns's and that is a conflict .. i will work it out again thanks for your help I have saved your setup files to my harddrive and i will keep them safe. With your permission i would like to post them else ware i will give you all the credit if that is ok with you ...
