POP3 servers for VMS

Well, I'm obviously not unbiased, but I'll offer what information
I can on the MultiNet/VMS POP3 server ... I'll let those who are
better familiar with the others talk about them.
It works reliably and is quite easy to configure. It's not as
fast as some, as it logs in a new job under the client's
username for each new POP3 connection. However, if you minimize
the SYS$SYLOGIN/LGICMD overhead, it can perform well.
You can apply IP-address-based access lists to the POP3 service
as such. Username authorization is done either against the
SYSUAF via the plaintext username/password method, or (in MultiNet
V3.5) Kerberos tickets (KPOP) can be used. The system manager can
place further access controls or other customizations as desired into
SYS$SYLOGIN:.
Extensive logging and debugging information is available. Connections
can be logged to the VMS accounting file, to the VMS audit log,
and to the MultiNet master server log. Additionally, the
POP3 transactions themselves can be logged to POP3_SERVER.LOG.
The selection of the mail folders to use, and the disposition of
the mail messages, can be controlled by logical names, as can
many other aspects of the POP servers operation.

The current release of PathWay for VMS from Wollongong (now Attachmate)
includes a robust POP2/POP3 server. Performance is good (we don't create
a new process every time a PC wants to check for mail) and it's quite
configurable. We use it internally, so we'll keep adding enhancements.

A representative of Innosoft sent me a note saying
that VMS and Open-VMS are now the same. Now I'm confused.
I thought there was a difference. Can someone explain?

VMS and OpenVMS are the same. There is a long explanation in the VMS
FAQ (and if you have not read it, then I would recommend it, there
are many good tips more usefull than this name discussion).
In short the DEC sales people thougth VMS would sell better
with the name OpenVMS (the VMS engineers made VMS run on the Alpha
platform and made VMS POSIX compliant at approx. the same time, but
I doubt that the sales people would have omitted the name changes if that
was not the case, but then I dont like sales people !).

In fairness, we should direct you to the marketing morons who made the
change but I'm not sure who they are or where to find them (other than high up
in Digital somewhere).
With the release of VMS V5.5-2 (ca. 1992) Digital changed the *NAME*
of the operating system to OpenVMS to "highlight" the "openness" and
"standards compliance" of VMS. This was not exactly the smartest move Digital
ever made. Whatever the benefits of the move, they have been offset by public
confusion. Almost four years later, you still don't understand the difference
between VMS and OpenVMS (none). The confusion was further confused by the
advent of the Alphas which made necessary an Alpha specific version of VMS.
So you needn't "convert" from VMS to OpenVMS but you may need to port some
code from OpenVMS/VAX to OpenVMS/Alpha.
There is a school of thought, of which I am a leading proponent, that
holds that the "Open" is silent! :-)

If you hear someone say "OpenVMS", it meansthat thery are sales/marketing.
If you hear a DEC engineer say OpenVMS, it means that they were forced
by the marketing folks to say it
and would be fired on the spot if they
ever said the word "VMS" again :-) :-)
If you hear someone say VMS, it means that they have not succombed to the
meaningless marketing fluff that harmed VMS more than it helped by confusing
customers who were already fearing the death of VMS.
Oh, by the way, I saw an IBM ad for OpenMVS !!!!!!!!! I guess that it sort of
confirms that OpenVMS is also a legacy system !!!!!!!
