Hi Folks,

Whilst looking through STARLET.REQ the other day, I came across a
reference to SS$_FISH. I determined the value (decimal 2928) and
did "$ exit 2928" to see the following

%SYSTEM-W-FISH, my hovercraft is full of eels

This only appears to be Alpha V7.3.
Any one have any idea what it is all about?
(Good to see that someone at Compaq still has a sense of humour.)

Regards,
Dave.

This appears to be in all 7.3 systems, i.e. not a local prank at your
site.

SS is probably secure shell. FISH is a freeware secure-shell client
(but I think the corresponding guru, Richard Levitte, has dropped it (or
shall we say "thrown it back"?) in favour of something else.

As for the phrase itself, its origins date back to one of the all-time
classic Monty Python sketches, the bogus Hungarian-English phrase book.

VMS quotes of the day: "Do you want to come back to my place, bouncy
bouncy?" "My nipples explode with delight."

There used to be a substitute message file from years past that could be
used to replace a majority of the system messages, typically on April
Fools Day. It was fun and funny for a day or two but hot its obvious
draw-backs... Anyone remember where that file is/was?

No, but I remember in Datatrieve, if you used the line "AT MIDDLE OF PAGE"
(instead of "AT BOTTOM OF PAGE" or "AT TOP OF PAGE"), you would get the
message: '"At middle of page" is innovative, but, alas, illegal'. One of
my favorites (along with the embedded Wombat lore).

I have a copy of APRILFOOLS.MSG it is 110 blocks long. It does things like;

$ purge/log
%PURGE-I-NOFILPURG, *.*;* deleted?
$ assign x.x xx/log
%DCL-I-SUPERSEDE, XX's old value was stupid anyway

If anyone wants to put it on a web site and serve it out then let me know.

I recently discovered that with a Tcpip 5 (.0 or .1), you can use the Sda
extension, and do

$ ana/sys
tcpip show bug
tcpip sh crash

I let you see the results...

I seem to remember from the early days when DECNET was being developed
there was a status message for an "impossible" condition (as the story
goes) that Ken Olsen got when demonstrating DECNET for the press or some
other dignitaries. The message??

%DECNET-F-NFW

you figure it out the text...

On the same subject, you can find Psicopy on the Freeware.
The author, Guillaume Gérard, has put in the kitinstal, at the place where
you get a
-s-xxx, no more questions...
-s-boirecafe
which can be translated from french as
-s-drinkcoffee

SS$_ is the symbolic rendition of the System facility code that VMS
displays as %SYSTEM-. It has nothing to do with Secure Shell.

Aprilfool.txt. Got a copy. Never got it to work. Didn't try too hard.

Actually, IIRC it wasn't at all impossible: the associated text explanation
was "Path lost to partner" (i.e., connection lost - can't continue, or, in
the vernacular, NFW).

At least it is humour and textual, unlike the Easter Eggs some other party has
provided. And the stupid animations. that I see on colleagues' screens.

BTW, you now learn American English as opposed to English English :-)

%USER-E-TYPETOFAST, user typed message before thinking

:-(

Seeing SS in connection with FISH (which is a freeware secure-shell
client for VMS) made me think of secure shell.

As has been previously recorded, it's an internal error value
that is not supposed to ever be returned to the user.

Perhaps someday they'll fix %SYSTEM-S-ACCVIO, which I assume we
were also not meant to see.

However, what is the impact of using this message file on a more recent system
? Any chance that some error messages would be the wrong one produced ? Or is
there so garantee of upwards compatibility in the order of messages from
version to version ?

Most interesting. TCPIP SHOW BUG works fine.

But TCPIP SHOW CRASH yields "unrecognized keyword - check validity and
spelling /CRASH/

(interestingly, if this is the first command I issue, it first goes through
the hoops of reading the various symbol tables before issueing the error message).

My only conclusions is that the VMS engineers don't like me and added code
such as :
"if JF THEN don't execute the show crash". :-) :-)

In all fairness, I do get 2 error messages before:
TCPIP-E-NOWIP-Pathworks over IP driver is not present
TCPIP-E-NOTERMINAL-Terminal port (TN) driver is not present

(note: telnet works fine, but not used at time command is issued).

Early on, I kept getting the "network partner exited" and would always think
it was very funny because, english as my second language, I would

Another example of d|i|g|i|t|a|l/Compaq humor that I recently
discovered:

While looking through the 7.3 Alpha Partitioning and Galaxy Guide,
(AA-REZQC-TE, Sept 2001) I came across the following Galaxy SDA
command in section 2.14.3.2:

SHOW GLOCK

SHOW GLOCK displays Galaxy lock structures. Default is display of
base GLOCK structures.

I don't know if this is an Easter Egg or something real, but I stumbled

Well, bit 15 (STS$V_FAC_SP) is clear. So it's not a message specific
to KATIE. And bit 27 (STS$V_CUST_DEF) is clear. So it's a Compaq
facility number. And bit 28 (STS$V_INHIB_MSG) is clear so this
particular error code was presumably returned by a utility that displayed
its own termination error message.

The Katie facility is %x3f3 (Bits 16-27 -- STS$V_FAC_NO, STS$S_FAC_NO)

$ HELP /MESSAGE /FACILITY=? doesn't list it. It is buried in
SYS$MESSAGE:SYSMSG.EXE right between TPU and BUS.

for me, the above does:

SYSGEN-E-NOPARAM, no such parameter

(and for the real parameter, it just professionally displays the value).

That one made it as far as a manual

(I came across it recently in one

FUBAR made it too (Failed Unibus

On 7.2-1 at least you get a meaningful message:

$ mc sysgen sh timeprompwait
%SYSGEN-E-NOPARAM, no such parameter

Device related commands are no longer supported by the SYSGEN utility.

Use the SYSMAN facility to manipulate devices and drivers.

Easter is just about a month away and they have already started to sell Easter
eggs in stores.

Are you saying that Compaq intends to productize those easter eggs, and
require a special licence ($$$) to access those easter eggs in VMS ? (would
those be considered system integrated products ?)

It is, of course "timepromptwait" when spelled correctly.

If you look at it, in the "Units" column you'll see that
it specified "uFortnights", which are microfortnights.
(As the help for the parameter on recent versions of VMS
notes, the microfortnights are approximated in the actual
implementation by using seconds instead - a microfortnight
is 1.2096 seconds so they are short by a bit over 17%).

Various terminological repositories contain information
similar to the following entry:

microfortnight

n. 1/1000000 of the fundamental unit of time in the Furlong/Firkin/Fortnight
system of measurement; 1.2096 sec. (A furlong is 1/8th of a mile; a firkin is
1/4th of a barrel; the mass unit of the system is taken to be a firkin of
water). The VMS operating system has a lot of tuning parameters that you can set
with the SYSGEN utility, and one of these is TIMEPROMPTWAIT, the time the system
will wait for an operator to set the correct date and time at boot if it
realizes that the current value is bogus. This time is specified in
microfortnights!

Multiple uses of the millifortnight (about 20 minutes) and nanofortnight have
also been reported.[NHD]
