As it happens I have two of them. One is the first VMS box that ever
entered my home.
Its RD54 is now long dead. The second VS2000 came with 14 MB memory
and a working RD53.
Unfortunately its ethernet interface won't work. Neither the RG58 nor
the AUI connectors work, so
it talks DECnet over DDCMP.
All suggestions on how to fix this problem are welcome.
Anecdote : I got that VAXstation in 1988 or 1989. Big VR160 screen and
around 1990 my daughters, aged 6 and 7
were playing games on it (Mastermind, Submarine, wordguessing games
that I wrote myself).
My neighbour's sons were also playing games on a Philips PC that ran
MS-DOS . In those days MS-DOS games
tended to crash rather frequently and the boys soon got used to power
cycle the Philips to get it started again.
Linda asked them why they had to do that so often. The boys didn't
know any better than that was the norm for
computers and asked her how she fixed our computer. Her answer: "It's
always on, we never it have to restart it
because it is a VAX".
Hans
PS
Linda still has the honoury title "most technical daughter" :-)
