Still looking for

DECNAs - ethernet adapters for PRO-350s andPRO-380s

PDT-11/130 PDP 11 with TU58s in a VT100 case.

Microvax/Vaxstation 2000

Willing to pay a reasonably large slug of cash for these....surely someone
must have some of these taking up space in their collections...

Fair enough but they're so slow and MFM drives are rather pricey these days.

I couldn't agree more. They are wretched, entirely worthless machines.
Nevertheless, as a public service, I am willing to take these hideous,
worthless devices off of people's hands as a favor to them...

As it happens I have two of them. One is the first VMS box that ever
entered my home.
Its RD54 is now long dead. The second VS2000 came with 14 MB memory
and a working RD53.
Unfortunately its ethernet interface won't work. Neither the RG58 nor
the AUI connectors work, so
it talks DECnet over DDCMP.
All suggestions on how to fix this problem are welcome.

Anecdote : I got that VAXstation in 1988 or 1989. Big VR160 screen and
around 1990 my daughters, aged 6 and 7
were playing games on it (Mastermind, Submarine, wordguessing games
that I wrote myself).
My neighbour's sons were also playing games on a Philips PC that ran
MS-DOS . In those days MS-DOS games
tended to crash rather frequently and the boys soon got used to power
cycle the Philips to get it started again.
Linda asked them why they had to do that so often. The boys didn't
know any better than that was the norm for
computers and asked her how she fixed our computer. Her answer: "It's
always on, we never it have to restart it
because it is a VAX".
Hans

PS
Linda still has the honoury title "most technical daughter" :-)

My first home VAX was also a MicroVAX-2000. I may part with others that
I've collected but the first one and its brother will be retained curios
in my personal collection. Besides, I can't split up Calvin and Hobbes.

My now well in their 20s kids worked on VT220s to edit reports for school
projects on my VAXen; albeit, they didn't use the MV2000s. Little drive
space on them even with the expansion plates and a second external drive.
They're loud too, those RD54!

Are you sure it has the DESVA ethernet option board installed? Have you
considering trying the DESVA from the other 2000 in this one?

When the VS2000 with the faulty NIC is conected to the 10BASE2 wire
and is
booted the other machines receive a DECnet adjacancy up message from
it.
The node shows up briefly in the output of a DCL SHOW NET command on
its neighbours.
After a while (sorry, I forgot the timing) it looses all connectivity.
While it is up network
commands are not succesful: SET HOST just hangs as does $ DIR KOPER::
(which ougth to work
given its DECnet configuration).

So I'm sure it has the DESVA board installed. IIRC the thinwire
connector is on a separate board.
I haven't opened it for 8 years or more so I cannot remember what the
rest of the electronics looks like.
The AUI connector shows the same behaviour so whatever the fault it is
in the circuitry that drives the
AUI port. I'll open it up next weekend, if I can remember how. The
VS2000 is a tight fit inside...

Could be a pool or other resource problem.

I may have one for two adapters for PRO350/380, I'll have a look in the dungeons and let you know.

Wonder what "reasonably large slug of cash" may be?

Possible Bob but not likely. KOPER is a VAXstation 2000 with 14 MB

The system has nothing to do so even when the system hadn't even been
AUTOGENed,
it should have responded to inbound DECnet requests. It does resond
now DDCMP is
used instead of ethernet. For the time being, especially given its
age, I think the NIC is
broken.
But I spend too much time learning to fly and not behind my VMS
systems :-)
